I was really disappointed that Viz cancelled Gintama. Gintama is one of the best anime and manga that I've ever seen and the humor in it is just awesome.
Absolutely hilarious series. Some of the references can be a little hard to understand as they reference many things from Japanese culture like manga series, bands, voice actors, idols, and celebrities
Viz Media should really consider restarting the series. This is one of the hottest, most popular series in the world and it's tons better than One Piece, Naruto or Bleach etc. I'm currently getting through everything from the library, I'm just past vol. 11 but am going to make a point of finishing all 23 vols that are available aqap.I look for this every time I'm in a Barnes and Nobles and all they have are the first two volumes. I'm not made of money but I would definitely consider buying this if it was available. But every time all that's available is the first two volumes. Gintama is essentially the most popular series around and it's hilarious, the comedy is some of the best. And action arcs are starting to get really good too. It's weird that we have most of these monstrous children's series in English print but not freakin' Gintama, the greatest shounen of all time beside Dragonball.I'm not probably going to catch up to this on the internet either, even though there are fan translations and I do prefer the manga to the anime. I really like to read manga at bedtime to get to sleep and looking at a screen doesn't help that. Plus I can watch the anime. But if more of this series was in print I'd go for that first. The little cultural allusions are not a barrier with this series at all, the comedy stands on its own through every culture. The little cultural jokes are usually poor and unnecessary. A lot of it is physical comedy, with some plays on language. But you usually get the joke with but a little tip off.Pretty much the best thing going. Sad that Viz wants to spend time on series that don't matter.
One of the best manga (and anime) ever. Nothing beats Gintama! Highly entertaining and amusing. If you must, try watching the anime too as it has it's special moments.
I love Gin Tama. I hate that I can't find the rest of the series in English. It's the only manga I started my collection of. :(
