For a series that encourages a creative storytelling narrative, this book does a poor job at teaching children in a worship service setting. More is needed. Anybody can paraphrase stories, I did not need to buy a book to do that.
Most Children's Sermon books are filled with the following: a lesson where an object's meaning is stretched to its metaphorical limits, a requirement of high levels of crafting skills, and lack of depth in theological ideas that one must think children aren't able to grasp the divine (even though we think they can do the mental gymnastics to see how God is like a toothbrush or some such rubbish)This is not a collection like that. The narratives of the Revised Common Lectionary Year C (relying heavily on The gospel readings) are retold in child appropriate ways with a simple and yet awesome prayer at the end. Children will be drawn to these stories and that's what the purpose of the children's sermon should be
This is a simply and brilliantly conceived book to aid those responsible for the children's message in worship to communicate the essence of a biblical story to young listeners without cumbersome objects or irrelevant additives. Ms.Wehrheim is keenly aware of children's love of stories and often ends the story with an open-ended question which encourages them to think. Many pastors should especially read the introduction. There would be less waving at grandma from the front of the sanctuary and more real listening.
Not very helpful. It lacks creativity and I find the lay people who give the children's sermons are not making use of it.
