Saturdays and Sundays are very special days for the child in this story. A bright, beautiful little girl shares her pride in her Latin heritage. She describes the time she enjoys with both sets of grandparents and the excursions she takes with them. I like the way the young protagonist is so well loved that readers feel as if they are being drawn into a loving vortex.I love the way Spanish words are included in this story and descriptions of Latin celebrations. This is a book to be savored and shared with others. The characters are very appealing and there is a sharing of cultural information and ideas. This is an excellent teaching tool. This book is for everyone. I heartily and happily recommend this book.
My family is Mexican and my in-laws are European. This is a great way for me to help introduce the different cultures to my daughter as she grows up and has different experiences with her different grandparents. Also a great way to introduce Spanish in a full and beautifully illustrated book.
This book is fantastic for discussing multicultural issues. I am a German while my husband is Mexican. We have raised 4 lovely and very accepting girls. "I Love Saturdays y domingos" is one of the few children's book on the market that integrates two different cultures. In this book, a little girl spends Saturdays with her father's parents. The grandfather comes from Europe and the grandmother comes from California. On Sundays, the girl spends time with her mother's parents: abuelito (grandfather), who comes from Mexico and abuelita (grandmother), who is Native American.Throughout the story, the little girl learns about her family's cultures. The little girl and two sets of grandparents play with animals, watch movies, go to the circus and do other things that families love to do. At the end of the story, they all come together for her birthday party.Those who speak/read little or no Spanish may have difficulty with the Spanish text. The book does not offer pronunciation keys or meanings to the words. Although some of the words written in Spanish may be explained in the adjoining page when the girl visits her English-speaking relatives.This book may be more appropriate for families familiar with both cultures or for children who are just beginning to learn about the Latin American culture.
This book was great because my kids could identify with the cultures of both sets of grandparents.

I really enjoyed reading, I Love Saturdays Y Domingos to my three grandchildren. It is a beautifully illustrated book and it is one of my grandkids favorites.
Since my daughter is half white, half Mexican, I thought a book about a little girl spending time with her two sets of loving grandparents from different cultural backgrounds would be perfect for her, and the book got great reviews so I ordered it. However, when I read it I was shocked by how blatantly the book favored the Mexican grandparents. White grandma and grandpa watch a "VCR tape" about the circus, while Abuelito y Abuelita take the child to the zoo. Grandpa has a fish tank, but Abuelito takes her fishing. Grandma collects owl figurines, while Abuelita has live chickens that have just hatched baby chicks. Page after page, this book makes the white grandparents seem like somewhat pathetic elderly people, and the Mexican grandparents are fun-loving and energetic. In summary, I think this is a sweet idea for a book, but horribly written, and I would never expose my daughter to these messages.
