Drawings of my budding 4-year-old artist took on different dimensions after this book. Juno's separation from his Korean Grandmother required communication with his pictures and leaves. It translated into pebbles and bicycles for my daughter. The touching part is that love can travel within the confines of an envelope. ILLUSTRATONS were the ICING on the cake! Job well done. I buy the book as gifts.
As an elementary school teacher I'm always looking for books that are eloquently written and visually stunning. I'm happy to report that Dear Juno serves up both. This is an incredible book by an extraordinary author. It's the perfect book to read-aloud as well as to curl up with before going to bed. I can't wait to read more of Ms. Pak's work.
I was simply amazed at how this simple little story expressed the complicated nature of inter-generational and cross-cultural relationships in such a hearfelt, effective and deceptively simple way, and that language and age barriers can be overcome with a little creativity. Kudos to the author. My children loved this book and I recommend it to all parents who would like their children to understand, appreciate and thrive within the growing global culture.
In this lovely book, a story about communication across geographic, cultural and generational distances is distilled into a few sparkling pages. The simple, charming language is inviting for children, but it carries the force of poetry, so adults will enjoy it too. I adored it.
Charming! My children (lasses 4 and 7) & I found it exceedingly entertaining. Her style & rhythm reminded me of another naturally gifted story-teller I never had the privilege to meet, the Danish countess Karen Blixen. Although targeted towards children, the author's voice came across as a secret confidant - and you were her best friend. We eagerly await her next story & hope she has a chance to visit London for a booksigning. My girls love Juno! - An admirer in England.
Sweet book about a picture-based story telling/relationship between a child and his grandma. Encourages kids to see relationship in a different way. Wish it was a tad longer book. Thought it was too short, even for a kid's book. Good for age 3 and up.
I used this book as part of a multicultural writing lesson for a kindergarten class. The kids loved it! It is a sweet story and beautifully illustrated. It generated insightful discussion, writing, and drawing from the students.
