Best Friends forever by Beverly PattFDR signed resolution 6006 shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the result was that thousands of Japanese American citizens were taken from their homes and placed in what was called "internment camps." The truth is that America treated the Japanese only slightly better than the Germans treated the millions of Jews, Poles, Catholics, Slavic's and gypsies."Best Friends Forever", by Beverley Patt is designed to appeal to Middle School students yet is just as exhilarating to a 51 year old. The d4esign is that of a scrap book, with letters between Dottie, A Japanese 8th grader who is interned in Camp Harmony and her best friend Louise Krueger, who stayed at home with her family and endured rocks through their windows, spits on the street and cat calls such as "Jap-Lover!", occurrences that cause Louise to grow up faster than the typical middle school student. At the same time, nothing will change a 13 year old girl more than being interned at Camp Harmony. After growing up thinking herself as an America, Dottie is suddenly forced to view her family heritage with both shame and contempt. As the book progresses so does the wisdom of all the characters. Louise meets a young soldier in the hospital ho has taken shrapnel and explosions to the face and is hoping for his eyes to heal. (By reading the special thanks we see that after the books ends, Louise marries this boy). At the same time, Dottie's is learning much about Japanese culture from her Grandmother, who spends the afternoon teaching Dottie how a young Japanese girls behaves and she learns to love her grandfather, who is so angry and depressed that his health begins to fail and he spends most of the book in the infirmary.
