If you want an elementary school aged child to read an entire volume of poetry, the poetry needs to be funny, appealing, and sometimes thought-provoking, and A Funeral in the Bathroom manages to be all three. The poems all somehow involve a school bathroom: two kids in a fight meeting there; a girl losing a beloved piece of jewelry down the toilet; a student camping out in there to read, etc. They're sweet, short, relatable, and sometimes poignant (characters having a quiet moment of contemplation). Some are laugh out loud funny, but none are vulgar or gross. Don't get turned off by the phrase "bathroom humor," because there's nothing objectionable in these - they're safe, even to be read aloud as part of storytime or book sharing. My third grade son has read and re-read it, and he really enjoys it. I would recommend this especially for children who are fans of Jack Prelutsky's poetry or Shel Silverstein's poetry.

My 8 year old son prefers to buy and borrow from the library on his own. He found this book on the Internet and asked me to order it.He was very happy with the book. He even took it to school to share with others (something he doesn't do often as he is very shy).

My son was required to read from different genres, so we picked this up for poetry. He loved it! Even read a few back to me he thought were particularly funny. Totally engaged him and he read it in nothing flat.
