Our 4 year old daughter absolutely LOVES this book! Every night, I ask her which book she wants me to read at bedtime and (without fail) she grabs "Guess Again!" The first time we read it, the entire family was laughing at the unexpected answers when you turned each page. The illustrations are brilliant and so creative - I've never seen a book like it! Our 7 year old son, couldn't wait to share it with his friends - he loved that no one could guess the answers! It's great fun and I would HIGHLY recommend it!
"Guess Again!" is a silly fun book where you have to guess an object from the clues given on the page. So on the first page you see a silhouette of what looks like a bunny. The shadowy ouline is set in a carrot patch. There is a rhyming verse that even rhymes with the word "bunny". But when you turn the page, it's not a bunny at all! It's Grandpa Ned (in a bunny like contortion)! Each page follows this same format - rhyming verse, visual clues, with a silly solution to the guessing game. This book was a HUGE hit with my 5 year old. By the end, he was in fits of laughter and anticipating Grandpa Ned at every turn. We had to read the story 4 times in a row. He LOVED Grandpa Ned and all the other silly characters. The next day, he insisted on bringing the book to school to read to his class at story time. His teacher said the book was a big hit all around. This book is very cute and entertaining. The text is easy enough for an early reader to sound out words. I actually wondered if this would be a story we'd read once and then lose interest in but that is definitely not the case here.Definitely recommend for preschool/Kindergarten aged kids.
Since I read this book to 32 classes, 650 kids, I think it should count in my total reads for the year. Though it only has 32 pages. And even though every page has only twenty words on it. But it is a deep book. So it should count. No, it's not really deep. But clever. Yes, I think we can agree that it is quite clever. Over the heads of most of my youngest library visitors. But, hey, they got some of it. Enough that it is now on the top 10 Most Checked Out Books list. And that's what really makes it count.
Definitely not what I expected... We checked this out from the public library, and after reading it a few times, just had to add it to our collection permanently. This book is like one of those movies that gets better each time you read it... The first time I read it, I thought it was pretty goofy. I read it to my 6 year old and after the first few pages where she caught on to what was happening, she was laughing. She couldn't wait to read it when we picked up her 10 year old sister from dance. We read it normal to the 10 year old, and once she picked up what was going on, we were all laughing hysterically! And of course I took it to read to the first graders, and they were all hysterically laughing by the time we were done.Guess Again has turned out to be one of our favorite books, we can read it over and over again and it never ever gets old. Keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to read it to the 2nd graders. Some humor just never gets old!
I love the unpredictability of the book. Gave it to my dad to read to the grandkids. I have to say, the younger ones were a little confused at being wrong, and why it was so funny, but my dad was cracking up. :) The jokes probably work best for kids 7 +.
This book is a testament to the inherent intelligence of the early reading-age child. Whereas many books intended for this age are written simply to expose children to written language, "Guess Again!" engages the young reader as a participant in the creative process. A child will return to this book again and again because she realizes that with each turn of the page her expectation of what's almost certainly coming is replaced with something infinitely more hilarious. And this process is tremendously important in this age, when children are beginning to develop the cognitive power of abstract thought. It's refreshing to see a new children's author who seems to understand the important role of literature in the process of a child's cognitive development. "Guess Again!" is not only a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated book, it's also an important one.
Just when you think you know the answer to the riddle, it is something completely different. My son giggles at this book every time we read it. The illustrations are also very funny. This is a great book for a 4-6 year old, although my 7 year old nephew was also laughing very hard while reading it.
This book was very cute. I actually wasn't expecting the real answers to the riddles, so I got a kick out of reading the book. The illustrations are attractive and humorous. The joke became a bit repetitive, but my kid didn't seem to mind. A good, short read overall.
