There’s a lot to like about this tale of a modern teen stumbling into the world of magic, with its hidden islands, Unseen races, tweaked history and dragon trains, but there were a couple of things that hit a my rare sore spots. On the whole it’s a good, solid read. The mystery of Ben’s parents offers plenty of reason to keep turning the pages, and his descent into Taecia was imaginative and fascinating. Okay, so perhaps the name dropping of various UK shops and brands got on my nerves a bit, but it’s a good way of connecting readers to this strange and magical place (though probably less so for those not familiar with a British high street). So what didn’t I like? Well, the first chapter didn’t work for me. I’m sorry, but if you’re going to use a historical setting, at least attempt to make it vaguely historical. The language, the attitude, everything is far too modern. I don’t care if this book is intended for a younger audience, if you’re going to use a historical setting then use it properly.I also really didn’t appreciate Ben’s attitude towards Natalie, the Token Girl. Actually I wasn’t impressed with Ben’s attitude towards girls in general. He’s seriously dismissive of them at several points in the book, and out of nowhere goes from suspecting Natalie for perhaps reporting all their plans back to the Institute to dismissing her completely as nothing but a pretty face. Not cool. Even when she proves him wrong, she still fails to rise beyond anything but token smart girl. And now this review is full of complaints, giving the impression that I didn’t like this book. Which is a shame, because I did. The world is imaginative, with more than a little of the same wonder Harry Potter was packed with – without falling into the Hogwarts trap.
