As early as the fourth century, his orthodoxy was suspect, in part because he believed in the pre-existence of souls. Today he is regarded as one of the Church Fathers.Origen excelled in multiple branches of theological scholarship, including textual criticism, biblical interpretation, philosophical theology, preaching, and spirituality. Some of his teachings, however, quickly became controversial. Notably, he frequently referred to his hypothesis of the preexistence of souls. As in the beginning all intelligent beings were united to God, Origen also held out the possibility, though he did not assert so definitively, that in the end all beings, perhaps even the arch-fiend Satan, would be reconciled to God in what is called the apokatastasis ("restitution"). Origen's views on the Trinity, in which he saw the Son of God as subordinate to God the Father, became controversial during the Arian controversy of the fourth century, though a subordinationist view was common among the ante-Nicene Fathers. A group who came to be known as Origenists, and who firmly believed in the preexistence of souls and the apokatastasis, were declared anathema in the 6th century. This condemnation is attributed to the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople, though it does not appear in the council's official minutes. Few scholars today believe that Origen should be blamed, as he commonly was in the past, for tentatively putting forward hypotheses, later judged heretical, on certain philosophical problems during a time when Christian doctrine was somewhat unclear on said problems.

I just started reading the writings of this great thinker, and I'm sure I'll finish this lifetime still reading and thinking about his words. So many time I have heard references to his writings; now I am reading them first hand due to my new interest in early church history. I find his thinking takes me into sometimes deep and sometimes expansive insights about the nature of divinity, my own soul, and the relationship between them. This is not just for study of history but for the contemplation of reality and consciousness. I find the writings of Origen surprisingly refreshing -- not moribund with tiresome polemics over religious trivia -- and filled with the deep, personal contemplation of God and Christ that the modern church has drifted so far from.

This Kindle edition is based on an original from 1885, and the translation reflects the English of the time - but I think this adds some charm to the work. The edition is well laid out, with a comprehensive interactive table of contents, and reads clearly. A good edition.

An accessible introduction to the work of an important Christian theologian, whose thinking bridged the chasm between Jewish scripture and the world of literate Greeks.

If you are Orthodox or just a scholar of early church history, you must have this book. Much more readable than I expected.

Origen wrote for the early Church and is one of the 'fathers' of Christianity. He and others added to the framework of our Christian belief and helped to make the teachings of St. Paul basic to the growth of the Church. Christians are urged to study early Church works in order to grow in knowledge of our Christian heritage. And by so doing we will not to be seduced by the rhetoric of modern atheistic writers and activists.

Highly regarded in the 1st and 2nd centuries for his Christian thoughts, he was later called a heretic. Now he is back in favor. In any case one of my quest has been to discover what was going on in the beginning of Christianity. I think a person who is interested in Christianity before it got politically twisted by Constantine and others, Origen is a must to read. It's a wonder actually that his works were not totally destroyed, so it is a blessing to be able to read this book.

If you're into theology, Origen is a must read -- he is one of a kind -- glad he's no longer considered a heretic!!
