Godly Play is not just another Sunday School curriculum. it is a profound spiritual practice that even young children can understand. Their understanding grows with them as they grow older. I've used the lessons on parables with adults and they have been very effective.
The concept that stories can introduce children, as fully realized spiritual beings, to the wonder of God & His interaction with humanity and all the mystery therein is truly worldview changing. I look at the kids running around church laughing and yelling completely differently now. Some might be uncomfortable since there is a perceived 'giving up of control' in that teachers don't spoon feed information, ensuring children 'know the right answers'. But having a place where they can practice quietness, pondering the mysteries of God is just such a different and refreshing thing to behold. I know I'm sold.
This is a good book for reference, but not the guide that i thought it would be. You will need to purchase other books to go along with it.
I bought this as an overview for the Godly Play system of children's education for the Church, so it is for a specific audience.Having said that, it gives something of the thinking and philosophy/theology of Godly Play that is able to provide a real depth to the program.Indeed I have found it very worthwhile as it has encouraged my thinking in other ways too.
When coupled with training, this approach to learning about the Christian faith is one that allows the learners (and their story teller) to discover and explore the tenets of the faith at whatever level of understanding they have. I wish I had been aware of this program many years ago!
Anyone who wants to know about Godly Play, a Montessori Christian Education program, needs to read this book. It helps them to know the importance of helping children know God in a new way.
Bought as an e-book. Love it! Love Godly Play! Was a fast, easy read. I have been making several lessons for our inner city church. Having a blast!
