The Coal ThiefBy: Alane AdamsThe Coal Thief is perfect and polished in so many ways and for so many reasons. You will be moved before you even open the cover. The young boy with his big brown eyes and arms full of coal will capture the hearts of young and old. Every illustration brings a part of history to life with the abundance of details. My second-grade students notice something new every time they read it.The Coal Thief is an ideal cross-curricular, multiple grade-level mentor text.• Language development through the rich vocabulary (trotted, scowled, trundled, sagging, shivered, etc.) and descriptive phrases (black gold, swallowed him up, craned his neck, turned tail and run, feeling the shame curl his toes, his heart felt so warm, etc.).• Reading with character voices by using the dialogue between Harley and Georgie, and Papa and Georgie.• Inferring character feelings.• Crafting a lead by describing the setting.• Predicting• Lesson/Moral• Character traits – Georgie and Papa are such well-defined characters.• A history lesson by looking into what life was like in the 1920s when times where tough. Not only is this book wonderful for teaching children about staying true to their values, but also the story shows how Georgie (the boy with the big brown eyes) has parents that guide, model and love unconditionally. A reminder all parents can draw from. Alane Adams and Lauren Gallegos have created a monumental book that is a great addition to any school, classroom, or home library. 5+ stars!!!!!
The Coal Thief by Alane Adams is a children's picture book set in 1920s Pennsylvania. It is winter, and Georgie's family is obviously struggling. Georgie is cold, they have no coal in the stove and his toes are poking through his boots. When his friend Harley stops by to take him on an adventure, Georgie goes along.Harley's 'adventure' turns out to be Georgie stealing coal from a passing train. When the train starts up again and Georgie is stuck in the coal car, he is scared of what will happen. His Papa comes along just in time and teaches Georgie a powerful lesson about caring for others ahead of yourself. The Coal Thief by Alane Adams is recommended for ages 4-8. I read this with my 4 year old daughter and she really enjoyed the story. It held her attention and she liked Georgie. When we neared the end of the story, she had a big smile on her face at how the story turned out. We live in an area with several coal mines and can relate to the setting and the characters in the story. This is one that is going on our 'keeper' shelf. Children everywhere can learn the important moral of the story. The Coal Thief by Alane Adams would be a wonderful Christmas gift for any child in the recommended age group or even a little younger. The illustrations are beautifully done by Lauren Gallegos.I received this book from the publisher for an honest review, but my review was not influenced by this.
This is an incredible, heart warming story about learning hard lessons and making tough decisions. There are so many wonderful talking points throughout this book that make is great for parents to read to young children. So much can be learned and felt with the heart when you read THE COAL THIEF. I loved taking to my boys about the things that can happen when we blindly follow people and how talking it out with parents can turn a bad set of circumstances into wonderful learning and giving opportunity! Plus, we talked about the power of giving to others in need. Such a wonderful story for this time of year! A must for a child's home library! I just adored this book and rate it 5 stars!!!
The Coal Thief is fantastic! I read it aloud to my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade class. The students loved it and chose it as one of their favorite books of the year. It is nice when I find books, like those by Alane Adams, that are relevant to my wide span of students. We discussed good and bad choices, influence of friends, and how talking to a parent can turn a bad decision around. The loved the ending, which inspired them to want help others less fortunate than them. A great story, with great illustrations - this one is a keeper!
I just love this book and think it is a must for everyone's home library! I read it to my 5 year old granddaughter, who asks for it over and over again. It evokes many questions from her and has provided many invaluable teaching moments. I love our time together with this wonderful book and believe my granddaughter will read it to her own children someday. I have purchased several to give as gifts. Thank you Alane Adams!
This is a great teaching book that kids can benefit from. I liked the little story as it kind of takes you back in time when the things we are used to today were not so readily available back in the late 1900's. This would make a love stocking stuffer gift or great birthday present.
