I've read a lot of books by William Stanek on Windows Server and Exchange Server so I was already familiar with the author. Having read a lot of technical books, I knew this book was going to be thick and heavy but I still didn't fully imagine this book to be this huge. It weighs more than 5.2 lbs so this is not something you'd want to put in your backpack for reference on the road. This is a great reference book on Windows Server 2012. It not only covers new features that were introduced with Windows Server 2012 but also covers a wide range of topics, from file system to networking and even Active Directory. If you want to buy one book for Windows Server 2012 that covers nearly everything, this should be it. Please note that this is not merely an introduction to Windows Server but a very in-depth look inside the latest offering from Microsoft. The book assumes some experience with the Windows Server platform - not necessary with version 2012 but any prior (but recent) versions of the Windows Server (e.g. 2003/2008).When I'm looking at purchasing a book such as this one, before I make my final decision, I make sure that an eBook is offered free of charge with the purchase of the physical book. I like reading technical books in physical form because sometimes graphs, tables and programming code don't layout nicely on the Kindle. But I'm also spoiled by the luxury of having access to the electronics editions of the physical books that I'm reading - especially those that are this thick and heavy. Another reason I like having access to eBooks on technical topics is so I can quickly search for very specific texts - it's much quicker and more complete than index at the end of a physical book.

I have read other books by Stanek and they've been quite good. I did not read the entire 1500+ page book that I am reviewing now. Why? Well, it is 1500 pages and a technical book. Further, I am a technical writer for Microsoft and I know most of what is in this book already. However, I am not personal friends with the author, so I don't consider this review biased in favor of the author. I like his work. In this book, he attempts to cover everything. He does not take on just "What is new" - he attempts to cover the whole product. That is not an easy job, but he does it admirably. Is everything here? No. I can only imagine that this would be more of an encyclopedia set if everything was here. I think the thing that I have to offer is covered well, what is maybe overkill, and what could be covered better:1. What is covered well?+ Boot configuration and troubleshooting (very, very good stuff!)+ Troubleshooting hardware / devices and device drivers+ Basic Active Directory Design+ Registry+ Performance (big section and some beyond what I would do, but I cannot call it overkill)+ RAID is covered well enough because most people use hardware RAID (there is not a ton of that in here)2. What is maybe overkill?= Taskpads (they are fairly unreliable and unpopular, in my experience)= Disk and File systems (hard to judge, but there sure is a lot on this topic)3.What is maybe missing? Okay, it is 1530 pages, so asking for more seems ridiculous. I am not asking for more!
