If you love Saga as so many people do, this volume - the sixth - will not disappoint. The writer/artist team of Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples once again delivers an outstanding, original and vividly-depicted story that engages the reader mentally, visually and emotionally that few comics can aspire to.This volume picks things up about a year or so after the last one left off, judging by Hazel's seeming age in the opening scene where she's in some kind of class with other Wreath (the ones with the horns) children. We quickly learn that this school - where Hazel has her 4th birthday - is part of a Landfall (the ones with the wings) military prison and that the kids we see are the children of various inmates, including Hazel's grandmother, Klara. Hazel then gives takes up her usual bit of narrative, flashing back to how they were captured. Time has moved on for all of the other characters as well in new and often unexpected ways, although some, like Gwendolyn and Sophie, do not appear in this story arc. And a number of new and interesting characters are introduced, kind of making up for some of the ones that were lost in the previous volumes. My favorite bit in this volume is when Hazel's teacher, Noreen, tells her "No offense to the rest of your family, but anyone who thinks one book has all the answers hasn't read enough books", which is followed by Hazel's wide-eyed reaction: "Of the many things my first teacher taught me, that's the one that stuck." You have to actually see the passage to feel the full impact of Vaughn's dialogue and Staples' art, but it's priceless. Absolutely priceless. As are so many things one encounters in the Saga series. One of the things I like about Saga is how complex the characters are.
