I found this book profoundly disturbing. The plot premise is very dark and Kafkaesque and it leaves the reader unsettled.Plot synopsis (SPOILERS):Charlie Brown overcomes his natural lack of crafting ability and creates a functional ghost costume of poor quality, sufficient to gain him acceptance from his peers. They go trick-or-treating unsupervised and all goes well for the other members of his group. Every house inexplicably gives Charlie Brown, and only Charlie Brown, rocks.Later in the evening they hold a party and Lucy draws a face of Janus on the back of Charlie Brown's head. The following day Charlie Brown recounts these events to a friend, he remains enthusiastic about next years prospects.More Questions Than Answers:What is the lesson here? That Charlie Brown is so loathsome that random households all elect to give him rocks? Is Charlie Brown a victim of gaslighting? Is he a dollar store version of Job?In support of the theory that he is loathsome, it is notable that his peer group are all on a first name basis, except Charlie Brown, who is always addressed formally. In the absence of any other "Charlies" that necessitate using last names, the constant use of "Charlie Brown" serves to isolate him from the others, yet is not severe enough to dehumanize him.Yet dehumanized he is. The discriminatory harassment he receives goes unacknowledged by the group, they do not offer even token empathy, and make no efforts to share their bountiful candy, confront the rock-givers, or to indulge in revenge in the fashion considered the norm for Halloween.
