As I have stated before I love this line of books. I use them in tutoring sessions for kids who need help in reading. They are very high interest and are good for learning vocabulary, since many words are defined within the context of the sentences. Lots of interesting facts.
Generally good, but some things need more information. Illustration on page 22 shows Hungary as a country from which immigrants came. However, before World War I, Hungary meant the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire that included what after WWI were Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and other southern and eastern European countries. People are misled about their ancestors' origins because of only Hungary being on the passenger manifests. On page 50, it wasn't just single women who might have trouble leaving Ellis Island, but also women traveling with their children to meet their husbands who already were in the U.S. A male relative or sponsor didn't have "to come for them", but did have to assure they had enough money to get to their final destination. I know, because this happened to my maternal grandmother and her 3 children in 1906. They only place the officials had to house these women and children while they waited for permission was the hospital island.
I used this book in my fourth grade classroom as an event in US history that impacted change in America. Students were grouped in 2-3 students and they read through the book with a novel study booklet I created to follow the sequence. Students learned a lot about the event as it was very age appropriate and inclusive of history. There are pictures that also contribute to the understanding and a timeline that students can follow as they read. The book is lined out in chapters that highlight the events one at a time. It was a great non fiction resource for my classroom.
I discovered this series when looking for books for a 3rd grade teacher who teaches informational text in a urban elementary school. The students loved this series, especially the girls. Very well received by the teacher and students.
This was very informative. I got me thinking about if my Dutch grandparents came through Ellis Island.I appreciate the Email addresses to look up my family name.Thank you for this quick informative great read.
This series is excellent for children interested in biographies. I found the book to be informative, yet easy to read. Though the series is wonderful for students in third and fourth grades, I have found that older students enjoy the series as well. As an adult, it was a quick read, yet accurate. Excellent for first "reports." The timelines at the end of the books are quite relevant.
I like this book because it has a lot of information you can learn about like for a essay like me. I hope people like this book like I do. I rate this book 5 stars because of all the information it has given to me.
These books are fantastic! I bought several for my 1st and 3rd graders to read over the summer. The quality is higher than I expected and the text is informational, while remaining on a child's reading level. Excellent learning tools for the whole family!
