East of West, Vol. 3 is the story of the American nations at war. It takes place, like the two previous volumes, in an alternate America which has been divided into six or seven different nations. Of course, it can be seen as a metaphor for America in the 21st century, divided into factions along racial and geographic lines. And of course, there is Death, along with the Beast, and the Four Horsemen. Quite a lot is going on.Weird, wonderful, beautiful, and yet hard to read, East of West, Vol. 3 epitomizes what an adult comic should be like. War comes at just the right time, as there are too many characters to keep track of, too many situations. The series is one that you should read and reread. It's very good, even if this isn't as good as the first two volumes. I still liked it very much and look forward to Vol. 4. ****1/4

When you write a book about the apocalypse in an alternate future, it's either cool or it's not. And if not, it's because the story is too corny. East of West is cool. They got the formula right. In the first two books, the characters were pretty bloody believable as rulers of the world. They didn't talk like walking cliches. And some moments took lyrical tangents (i.e. Ezra Orion's history and transformation). But in V.3, people are starting to talk more like typical comic book characters. The Mark Twain-looking schemer is rambling on an on about scheming, the President of the US is rambling on about the people being sheep, and the daughter or Mao is going on about "War!" Maybe it's unavoidable at this point. But there are still a lot of great arcane doings, the art's still amazing - clean and beautiful - and I will say the ending of V.3 is awesome. Death's son is an interesting character, with his prison goggles of the mind. I'm looking forward to how they play this out.

The story really picks up steam in this 3rd volume while still leaving plenty of time for development among this large cast of characters. It's becoming harder and harder to wait for the trades to release and I can't wait for this series to get the deluxe hardcover editions it deserves.Dragotta's art really takes off in this volume and shines in the much intensified action sequences compared to previous volumes. This series just keeps getting better and the volume ends with another great cliff hanger similar to the previous volume 2 when the Ranger came in contact with Death (not to spoil in case you haven't read it).Highly recommend this series and this 3rd volume definitely is the most exciting so far.

This book brings us back to the alternate America in which the Four Horsemen walk the Earth. They are divided with Death searching for his son and the others trying to fulfill the prophecy of the destruction of the world. The leaders of the major nations are meeting to prevent, or in some cases start, war.The art in this book is beautiful, just as it is in the previous volumes. All of the characters are drawn in a way that makes them unique. This isn't always something that happens in comics. Plus there is a large cast of characters to illustrate. The Death storyline is my personal favorite and this volume continues that trend. Wolf and Raven are fantastic companions to Death. The quest to find his son is pretty powerful with some nice twists thrown in.Speaking of Death's son, this volume really brings him forward. He had a brief introduction before, but now we see just what the son of Death and one of the nation leaders can do. The end of his storyline left me wanting to pick up the next volume to find out what happens. The war conference was the weakest part of the story to me. It moves a bit more slowly than the others and didn't have any major surprises. It is more political in nature and really seems to be setting the stage for things to come.

Easily the most action-packed, Dragotta's art really starts to shine (as if it didn't before). The world building is really starting to ramp up which is just making everything achieve a special perfection.

Things are getting complicated in this volume... strategy, political roles, and schemes, all play a big tangled role. The story is slow-paced, a lot more that the rest of the volumes so it was kind of uninteresting. But at the end it gained my trust again. Action and suspense was all over! It gave me a hard time reading it, 'cause i didn't quite well understood what was going on, what the characters had in their minds, but in volume 4 they clear up some things, and besides it made me start thinking, made anxious of what was going on. So that's a plus in a way. Overall it was decent.

Hickman is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers in comics today. East of West continues to be the most intriguing and compelling books i've read in a long time. He has created an alternate American history that is a fantastical mixture of science fiction, mysticism, American culture, cowboys, Indians, the apocalypse, Kung-Fu warriors, and the kitchen sink. BUT IT ALL WORKS!!! And its awesome. Highly recommended read from the start. Volume 3 starts off with a bang, full introduces a lot of sub-characters, clears a lot of the previous narratives lines up, and end with a kick to the teeth. Great read!
