Why be frightened of the most wonderful collection of tales ever written?  No Fear: The Canterbury Tales makes it simple for students to love Chaucer’s masterpiece in all its humor, bawdiness, and poignancy.  It features the original text on the left-hand page, side-by-side with an easy-to-understand translation on the right; in addition, there is a complete list of characters with descriptions and plenty of helpful commentary.

The title implies that the general prologue and all the tales are here. The back cover says the "most widely read tales" are here. But it's only five full tales, and not the best. The most boring and longest tale, the one told by the knight, takes up about half of the book. The Tale of Sir Thopas is read only by scholars. It is ostensibly told by the narrator (Chaucer's persona) and is meant to be a parody of a medieval poem of the kind no one alive today is likely to have ever seen. The Host cuts the narrator off because the story is tedious and the versification is inept. No one can know how the tale ends because Chaucer never intended to finish it. As an introduction to the works of Chaucer, this book is a disaster. I bought it to start a refresher course for myself after thirty years. Never mind! I'll go back to the original text in an edition with good notes.

I have two foreign exchange students in my British Literature class who were really struggling with beginning British language and the archaic words that they could not translate. I ordered the no fear version to help them with translation. It rocked! They loved being able to look at both version and have a better understanding of the storyline. I loved seeing them excel and succeed. I went along with my lesson plans great.

Helped us alot. I love the No-Fear series.

modern translation is quite entertaining
