Trouble River was about a young boy and his grandma. Dewey was building a raft, and he named it the Rosie B. The Indians suddenly came to their cabin, and hurt their dog, Charlie, with a tomahawk. Charlie survived, and Dewey, Grandma, and Charlie got on the raft to escape the Indians. Grandma stayed in the rocking chair on the raft during the trip. They were going to their neighbors' house, but that house was burned down too. That was not all their trouble. They were caught in dangerous rapids and chased by wolves. Finally they make it to Hunter City. Dewey's mom and dad were there because they had a brand new baby. Everyone was amazed that a 12 year old boy built such a good raft, and made it down the river.I am a 10 year old old that loves this book because it has action, is interesting, and you never know what will happen next. So read the book and see how you like it. This book is part action, part history, and part funny.....in one whole book!
If you like adventure, this is the book for you. This story takes place in the pioneer days. It is about a boy named Dewey who is very courageous, his cranky scary-story telling grandma, and his dog Charlie. The adventure begins when Dewey has to fight off an Indian who was going into his cabin. The grandma was scared that more Indians would come and kill them, so they went on Dewey's homemade raft to escape to the Dargan's cabin on Trouble River. Unfortunately, when they got to the Dargan's cabin it was burned down, so they decided to continue down the river to Hunter City. The adventure continues when they stop to sleep and are attacked by wolves. Thinking they are safe on the raft again, they have to fight the rapids. Will their raft survive the rapids? Will they make it to Hunter City? Read this book to find out?I like this book because it has lots of adventure. If you like this book you'll like the book Old Yeller.
This is a very good book. Dewey and grandma are home when Dewey'sparents are in Traver city having a baby. Dewey sees an indain and him, Charlie (his dog), and grandma try to get away. They meet wolfs and much more! Will they survive? Find out in Troble River!
This was a delightful story about a young boy having an adventure with his grandmother but I felt it could have been developed a lot more and with more substance. This would have been a great opportunity for her to teach him a few things about life.
Trouble River by Betsy Byars is a fantastic book! The characters in this book are Dewey and Grandma. Dewey is a hard worker and is sneaky. In the beginning Grandma is hard to work with. She is also stubborn, but at the end she is calm and easy going. The main part of Trouble River is about a boy and his grandma trying to get to Hunter City. Trouble River is so good that you will not want to put it down. It will also keep you guessing. Throughout the book, Dewey and Grandma run into a lot of problems getting to Hunter City. In the beginning, a twelve-year old boy named Dewey has to take Grandma down Trouble River because of an Indian. In the middle, Dewey and Grandma have left the Dargan's. They are on their way to Hunter City. They had stopped in the woods for the night. Dewey's dog Charlie started barking at something. Dewey woke up. He didn't see anything at first then he saw it. I'll let you read the book to find out what Dewey and Charlie saw. Will they make it to Hunter City alive? I hope you like this book as much as I do. The reason why I like Trouble River is because when I read this book I never wanted to put it down. It also kept me guessing.
I read with my grandchildren. When they are old enough to read on their own, I buy two books, and have them read theirs, I read mine, and we talk about the book. I look for the "old-fashioned" book where there is character development and personal growth. The grandchild who is reading this book with me in going into 3rd grade. I am sticking with Byers books to teach the concept of "Do you like the author, let's find another book by that author."This grandchild lives in the town where a shooter killed an entire class of children. She does not want to talk about death, guns, or any violence. This book, in a totally unrelated timeline, addresses tragedy and "carrying on." Just what, in these demanding times, is needed and tells the story from a young boy's perspective.
Dewey, a 12 year old boy is a brave pioneer that takes care of his old grandma. Grandma, is a worry wort and is scared of owl screeches and of being scalped. A tomahawk hit the dog, (Charlie's) leg when he was attacking the indians. Dewey, at the beginning was building something important at the river. I liked the book because it has those kinds of details that make you feel like you are really there.
I had to read this book for Language Arts class. While I generally consider Byars a good children's author, I have to say I'm being generous giving it 3 stars. The plot was childish and predictable, with a happy ending almost to the point of being sappy. Simple vocabulary. My review: A cute read for a third-grader, but steer clear of it otherwise.
