The book offers a contemporary twist and perspective to what is easily one of my favorite poems, 'The Hound of Heaven', which I would also say is arguably one of the most classical & 'must-read' type poems to ever exist - and also one that I recommend to many of my literature-loving friends. Although I still prefer the original, I am glad that the author has included the modern adaption - as I think many people should be able to experience the message that Francis Thompson offers to literary world, and the classic version may be quite hard to grasp for some people, especially the younger generation (which was definitely the case for me the first few times I read it, many years ago).Of course, I already am a huge fan of the poem - so I won't base my ultimate verdict about this book on that. Instead I am giving this book 5 stars due to the effort that the authors have made to share the poem to a more contemporary, modern audience and also especially in regards to the professional and clear formatting and illustrations.I hope as many people as possible will get a chance to read through this book because, in my opinion, The Hound of Heaven is a timeless classic that should not be overlooked by anyone for any reason whatsoever. Overall, I give this book a 9/10 - and I will be looking out for more modern adaptions by the authors.
I had heard about this poem and was encouraged to read it (the original). I am SO glad that this adaptation came along with the original, a the Kings English back in the 1800s is much different that it is today. This gem of a book also gives a nice biography of Francis Thompson and explains the story behind the original work, which his peers heralded it as a masterpiece. This is a very profound and moving poem that speaks truth regarding how we tend to run from God and want to lead our lives in self-absorbed ways, and how the Hound of Heaven pursues us unrelentingly.
I had heard the story before but I never really understood it until I read this book. I have anew appreciation for once hopeless and lost people who are being pursued by God because of His unending love to reach them and to give them hope and new life. I especially recommend this book for those who are living a life far from God to help them sense that God has not given up on them and that He is pursuing them because they matter to Him.
This rewrite of the classic poem is one that goes straight to the heart. You can feel the presence of God as He calls out to His lost sheep. I highly recommend this short book. A link to a short video is also included. Awesome! The original poem is included as well, although the language is almost foreign.
I have heard people refer to "The Hound of Heaven" but never knew the story behind it. This book includes the history of the author, the original poem, and a modern adaptation. It also includes beautiful illustrations. Highly recommended!
If you're like me, and you've just now stumbled upon The Hound of Heaven by Francis Thompson this book is for you. It does a great job at introducing this great work of poetry and helping new readers come to grips with the message of the poem as well as the poet who penned it.This has opened my eyes and my heart to the beauty of poetry that can communicate the deep longings of the soul.Definitively glad I read this.And I'm definitely going to read more of Thompson's work.
