It all begins when Soft Rain's teacher reads a letter stating that as of May 23, 1838, all Cherokee people are to leave their land and move to what many Cherokees called "the land of darkness". . .the west. Soft Rain is a nine year old Cherokee girl living with her family on their little farm in North Carolina. One day at school, Soft Rain is told her people will be "relocated" to Oklahoma. Soft Rain is filled with sorrow at leaving her home. She and her mother are seperated from her father, brother, and grandmother. They endure hunger, hardship, sorrow, and the loss of friends and relatives. Through it all, Soft Rain can only survive by relying on her courage. I highly reccomend this sad, moving book.
This book was listed in our curriculum as a recommendation during our historical fiction unit (I teach 4th grade). The story really captivated the kids and it was a great resource to use when identifying the characteristics of historical fiction. I also liked that this book came on Kindle - I bought the Kindle version and then projected it onto my board so we could all read along together.
I would recommend this book to all the fifth graders out therewho are learning about the Trail of Tears. It helped my child infifth who needed to research up on the Trail of Tears, so I'msure it could help yours. She highlighted key passages, thenused one of the features on her Kindle Fire HD to view all of herselected text and write a summary about it. But she did saythat there were some grammatical errors that made it a little bitof a confusing read. Overall though, she said that it was afascinating and very realistic book, and rated it five and a halfstars. I hope this helps!
This book tells about a young girl traveling west with her family and the trials they go through. I believe this book is a awesome book that you should read because it gives you a child's view of the Trail of Tears.
Soft rain is a good book. Soft rain lives in a village and the white men made them movie to the west and they don't want to move to the west I think it is a good book you should read this book if you like Indians.
This was a great story to help children understand some of what the Indians went through, I would suggest this story be put in schools.
This is a child's viewpoint of the Trail of Tears that is real, but appropriate. I read it to my 4th grade class during our history lessons, and they loved it even while being saddened by the plight of the Cherokee. Their empathy was compelling.
