Dan Wallace's book Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics is a top level Greek Syntax, the next step to take after first year Greek. However, at 800+ pages "several teachers of intermediate Greek have felt that it was unwieldy to use as a one-semester textbook," (p. 15) and so he decided to offer a condensed version. At 334 pages, _Basics of NT Syntax_ is a serious abridgment. At my school (Bethlehem College and Seminary) we had only a semester to devote to Syntax, so "Little Wallace" got the nod over "Big Wallace."I think Big Wallace is necessary to get a necessary grasp on the language, but Little Wallace does have some usefulness. Little Wallace is less than half the length of Big Wallace, and so entire categories of the syntax are missing (albeit, only the most rare). Big Wallace features many more scripture examples, many of them getting extended treatment and discussion, that Little Wallace just doesn't have space for. Ultimately, when learning Greek, you need much more than just a list of "Genetive Uses" to memorize, you need to see examples from the text of Scripture, over and over, until they sink into your brain. Little Wallace doesn't have this, Big Wallace does.Ultimately, you need to work your way through Big Wallace, probably several times. However, if you want a quick overview to tide you over, an initial survey before diving in, you may find Little Wallace of some use. I could see using Little Wallace for review after having worked through Big Wallace.
