Renovate Or Die: 10 Ways To Focus Your Church On Mission
Ebooks Online

Be the Church Jesus calls us to be. Bob Farr asserts that to change the world, we must first change the Church. As Adam Hamilton says in the Foreword, “Read [this book] carefully with other leaders in your church. . . . You’ll soon discover both a desire to renovate your church and the tools to effectively lead your church forward.” If we want to join Robert Schnase and claim radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith development, risk-taking mission and service, and extravagant generosity, we must also engage pastors and motivate churches. We must renovate and overhaul our churches and not merely redecorate and tinker with our church structure. With straightforward language and practical tips, this book will inspire and help you organize your church for new life on the mission field. Learn how to grow your church and discover the commitments that denominational leaders must make to guarantee the fruitfulness of local congregations.

I've recently read this book as part of a leadership academy I'm apart of. It was one of many books we've Let me begin by saying what is good about this book. First, Farr has some good thoughts on the life cycle of the church and the need for leaders to be skilled in assessing where a context sits in that life cycle. There are some very good thoughts on the need to effectively discern where a community is, based on where it has been and where it feels called to move into. However just just you're ready to go deeper, Farr leaves you wanting for more substance. He does a great job of expressing the need to do things but is very shallow on the "how." Dealing with these specific issues of leadership in a more complex and dense way would have made this book much, much better. But nonetheless he does have some good thoughts in this sectionAnd now onto the bad part...Being knowledgeable about one area of leadership does NOT make you an expert at all things. Farr is obviously well versed on the science of leadership. But that does NOT make him any of the following: 1) A Christian Educator (specifically skilled in the area of children's ministries); or 2) A worship theologianFarr blames Sesame Street for the reality that children should be entertained if they are to learn. Obviously it has been awhile since he's sat down to actually watch an episode of Sesame Street. Unless your children's ministry department is clever enough to equal the brilliance of Sesame Street, be careful how you take his advice. Formation is the goal of children's ministry. It's great when kids can be entertained in the process but that is NOT the objective to learning. Skilled leaders and volunteers will know how to use entertainment without making it the goal of the curriculum.
