Its ok, but not great. My son and I love the graphics and colors, but the text is lacking. The author writes a disclaimer in the beginning that she added non-traditional letters like C, X, and Z etc. (due to the Spanish and American influences on the country), but what disappointed me was that the traditional sound "Ng" from the real Tagalog alphabet was missing. So many Tagalog words start with "Ng", so she shouldnt have left this out. Otherwise, its ok.
I'm disappointed with this book. I was expecting more words in tagalog but there are only 26 words - one for each letter of the alphabet. The last letter of the alphabet Z is for zipper which is the same as English.
I purchased this book for my grandson. He is only four and one half months old. When I gave the book to my grandson's parents they were thrilled. Many of the Fliipino people speak both English and Tagalog. The parents read this book to their son. He will be hearing the Tagalog words and will have a good start to becoming familiar with the Filipino Words. I will also be looking at for other books of this type. Even I can remember some of the Tagalog words.
Purchased this book for my four year old son and he really likes it. The illustrations are bright and funny, which helps him to concentrate on the new tagalog words the book exposes him to. The author uses easy to understand situations for the context of using these new words. Very good book for those who are interested in exposing their children to a new language.
The second portion of the title, "filipino rhymes and verses" is very misleading. The book just has one Tagalog word for each letter of the alphabet, the rhymes and verses to introduce each word are all in English. I found the text to be very poor.
I loved this book, I got it for my daughters so they can know a little back history of their culture! Its really cute and teaches you some cute words, I just wish they had it where it pronounced the words so you know exactly how to say it, because me and my daughter were just guessing how to say the words and Im sure we were pronouncing them wrong! Other than that, adorable book!
I am american born, so I don't speak Tagalog fluently, but I understand it. I wanted my 5 year old to appreciate her culture, and use basic words like I do. This was a good book to start basic Tagalog vocabulary. The only problem was, the words are described in verse, not defined. Luckily I knew I knew the definitions of the words to tell tell her exactly what they mean. Some of the words in the book were even English b/c there is no Tagalog word for it. I wish they would have picked different words in place of the English ones. My daughter does enjoy this book, and the characters are presented in an appropriate, unstereotypical manner. I like this book b/c it doesn't show Filipinos to be so different. They are just normal characters in a book teaching you their language.
I wish there were more Tagalog children's books for toddlers (actually, I'd love Cebuano or Visayan ones) on . Given the choices, this purchase turned out pretty good. The quality of the text and illustrations are nice and definitely good enough for my 20-month-old. He brings me the book, signaling that he is to sit down on my lap so that I can read it to him. I'm happy with it.
