Dr. Seuss has always been welcome in every reader's home, but in this Bright and Early Book classic, Marvin K. Mooney's welcome has been worn out! In merry verse and illustrations, Marvin is asked to leave by every conceivable means of transportation. He can leave by lion's tail or stamp himself and go by mail. By stilts or Crunk-Car or Zumble-Zay, it's time that Marvin was on his way. Will Marvin ever get the hint? Combining brief and funny stories, easy words, catchy rhythm, and lively illustrations, Bright and Early Books are an ideal way to introduce the joys of reading to children.

I still have nightmares (and chuckles!) about getting a "big boy bed" for my then 2 1/2 year old son when I was about 5 months pregnant with his younger brother (who would soon be occupying the baby bed)... aaahhh, the bedtime battle of wills between adult and child! That was MANY MOONS ago, of course... I'm now a grandmother whose had the opportunity to babysit our two grandsons during the day, and those nightly battles are no longer part of the equation since they go home at night! When I read this book for the first time, I was a little confused as to who Marvin is supposed to be... is he the son of the finger-pointing adult in the book, or is he the Eddy Haskel-type neighbor kid who doesn't know when his welcome has worn out? (Maybe Dr. Seuss intended for it to be left to individual interpretation!)When I looked through the book prior to reading it to my grandson, I knew I'd be asked WHO was telling Marvin to "go" and WHERE he was supposed to be going and WHY he had to go... those bedtime battles came to mind immediately, so that became my explanation scenario. The book is actually quite funny, with the adult coming up with outlandish ways the child can accomplish his "going", just as long as he goes! It's a very colorful book, full of the typical Seuss rhyme and rhythm. In hindsight, I wonder if I would have had a less stressful time of it with my son at bedtime if I'd read him this book, then let him decide how (in his imagination) he'd be going to bed each night - Mom decides when, he gets to decide how... hmmm... can I get a "do-over"?We bought this book as part of a collection for our younger grandson.

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute. To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now! was one of her picks.Marvin K. Mooney is an excellent choice of a beginning reader after your child has read about 20 books and is ready for something just a little more challenging. The reason I say that is because there are a number of Dr. Seuss's imaginary creatures and inventions in here, so the illustrations don't totally tell you what the words are. For example, you will see a Ga-Zoom, a Bumble-Boat, a Zumble-Zay, and a Crunk-Car. These are, by the way, the most witty and imaginative illustrations as well. The fun of the story relates to an impatient adult (displayed by an arm and a hand wearing a watch) who wants Marvin K. Mooney to go. Marvin just listens until the end, when he goes. It isn't clear if Marvin K. Mooney is the child of the hand or the child's friend whose parent wants him to leave. It doesn't really matter. I lean towards the latter explanation. But we all know how adults like to say the whole name of a child to let them know the adult is very serious.Yet, the book isn't serious at all in any other way.
