This Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman dictionary was one of my favorite books as a child and it is now a favorite of my two-year-old son. Unlike the static illustrations of many other children's dictionaries, Eastman's colorful drawings are lively and always suggest a story. Sometimes my son and I will read portions of the dictionary straight-through, and other times we will randomly browse the book, discussing various pictures as they catch our eyes. Many of the entries actually tie together into humorous narratives. There are also a number of recurring characters, such as the bad baby who manages to spill his food, spill his drink, draw on the wall, paint on the wall, and float away in a boat, Aaron the Alligator and his unfortunate airplane, and oddballs Aunt Ada and Uncle Uriah. However, the four look-alike boys (Jerry, Joe, Jack, and James) who make their appearances in numerous entries were my personal favorites when I was a kid. Of course, Dr. Seuss injects his usual silliness into the text (e.g., "In our backyard we have a hippopotamus" and "A nest full of zyxuxpf birds" are, likely, his touches), but Eastman's drawings keep the book reasonably well-anchored in the known universe. As other reviewers have noted, the book's illustrations and text have generally aged well, though some of the references may perplex young readers: home movie projectors, milkmen, phonographs, typewriters, and popguns. Also, there are references to "American Indians" and "Eskimos" that no longer sit with us as well they once did. Finally, some potential buyers might be misled by the title, as the Cat in the Hat character does not actually appear anywhere within the book. Rather, the illustrations are entirely from the hand of P.D. Eastman.A fine gift for a toddler or preschooler, this big book is fun to explore and is an excellent tool in language development. No preschool or kindergarten class should be without a copy or two of this classic.
This book was originally given as a gift to my 1 year old son back in the 80's. Of all the books he had, this was the one he wanted me to read over and over again. It's a nice hardcover book with colorful pictures and funny wording on the inside, (which you'd expect from the Cat-In-The-Hat). When I saw this book was still in print several years later, I immediately bought it for my 2 year old great niece, who today is also loving it!
This was my absolute favourite book as a wee one. My parents told me I stole the book off my brother even before I was able to read and refused to give it back even as a teenager. I had the English-French Edition. I am ashamed to admit it but my french appears to be limited to what was available in the book some 35 years later despite 4 years of public school French.I have recently bought every child I know the English-Spanish version. And I found some English-French ones for my nephews in Canada. THis book is worth every penny.
Great resource. Each letter is represented with10-15 words with corresponding illustrations. Some words have additional information associated with them such as a simple definition, a sentence, or a simple phrase. The words are a combination of nouns, adjectives, verbs, and prepositions. This is not a traditional dictionary that has a word and a definition, although there are a few throughout the book. For instance: In the "N" section: The word is Nail and the illustration is a nail being hammered into some plywood this word has additional description. The word is "Near" and the illustration is a neighborhood with two boys waving at each other and a corresponding sentence, "Tom lives near Joe." Another word is Noon, the illustration is the sun above the steeple of a clock tower and the definition, "the middle of the day". All this to say, loving our "dictionary". It is a great resource as we teach our little one to build words.
I bought this dictionary after seeing it in my son's kindergarten class. I am a Dr. Seuss fan and this dictionary is wonderful! So many illustrations, some show the word being used in a sentence, and its really thought out. My son is learning how to use a dictionary so this is a fun way to easing him into using what is normally a ginormous, cold, boring, paper-weight of a book.
My daughter is in kindergarten and is 5 years old. I grew up reading this book and remember it to be one of my favorites. Lo-and-behold it is her favorite book now. We've had it a few weeks and it is excellent and encourages her desire to spell.
My brother has a learning disability and this is his go to dictionary. He likes it because there are pictures that match up to the words and the words are big enough that he can see them easily. Plus it never hurts that it's "The Cat in the Hat"!! This is his second one, his first lasted 4 years, that's how often he used it!
I bought this book for my three-year-old daughter to start teaching her word concepts. She absolutely loved it. The book made the words come alive for her. She has learned a few words from the book, and she loves going to the pages for those words and spelling them out proudly to me.
