I was a little worried about my son's vocabulary before we found this good workbook. It contains word relationships, passage-level context clues, sensory language, roots and affixes, test-taking practice section, and answer key. It has comprehensive, fourth grade-specific vocabulary practice to prepare for the year. If you find your child's vocabulary is not large enough, do get this book and have him/her learn the skills from this book. It not only reinforces classroom learning, but also enriches and enhances educational concepts. It further supports the test-taking skills, which greatly helped my son to succeed in his tests. He's already seeing how the techniques help him in his normal vocabulary work. He is now probably the student in his class who has the largest vocabulary. In the Beestar online tests (a nice web site beestar.org), he is ranked high in the honor roll. I’m very pleased with this book. It makes vocabulary learning fun to my son.
This is more of a spelling review than a vocabulary book. You're given a list of words for each lesson, which are then plugged into "fill in the blank" sentences and used with writing exercises. IT DOES NOT TEACH YOU THE MEANING OF THE WORDS! Most of the examples aren't even relevant to the words. My son was getting confused trying to complete each lesson BECAUSE HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE WORDS MEANT.Use this with an accompanying dictionary to get the most educational value.
These books are great, I just recommend leafing through them in a store like Barnes & Noble before buying to be sure the level you want to buy matches up with your child's capabilities. My girls are ahead in reading and language arts because we read a lot so I found it best to order the book that's one grade level above theirs.
I purchased this for my son to practice during spring break to keep up on his studies. They are keeping him right on track with what he is learning in the 4th grade.
Great for extra practice. We homeschool, and I wanted to have some extra resources for my daughter to ensure she is comprehending what she is learning.
A good book for brushing up on vocabulary skills. I use it for tutoring purposes.
