This is an excellent book for the gifted learner. As a former teacher of the gifted (17 years), I disagree with the previous review. The first lesson does not have the words listed on the page because the goal is a discovery process and to let the teacher/parent know what the child already knows. All of the "units" take this approach. Discovery learning is important for all children. It simply makes them think, become aware of what they already know, and allows the teacher to assess previous existing knowledge. The second lesson led us to further discover Jane Goodall and we went on a bunny trail on chimpanzees...more vocabulary to learn. The vocabulary is taught around several other bits of educational information that offers an opportunity for the gifted child to investigate topics that peak their interest. Yes, there is a typo of "flight" instead of "fight" in the second set of words, but it occurs 1 time....find me a book without a typo! I plan on using the remaining books in this series as my child grows.
I purchased this workbook at my local Barnes and Noble for my homeschooled second grader to use for independent vocabulary work. I do like that each lesson has several different ways to utilize the words. Examples include: crossword puzzles, word finds, fill in the blank, create your own story or sentences. My first problem is that the list of words are sometimes not introduced until the second or third page of the lesson. The student is left to guess the words or flip ahead to "find" the word list later in the lesson and then go back to complete the first part. I believe the word list should be on the first page of every lesson. The student could then study them first instead of guessing what the words "might" be first. (They're supposed to be gifted, not psychic!) Secondly we are only on page 17 and we've already found three errors. So far my daughter found a wrong clue number on a crossword, incomplete answers to a word find in the answer key and an incorrect word on a word list. If you're writing a vocabulary book for gifted students, is the point supposed to be to build their vocabulary or to get "schooled" when a seven year old finds your mistakes? I needed a book that my child could use for independent study while I work with my other kids. If I have to check every lesson for accuracy BEFORE she does it, how is that helpful? Bottom line, it isn't. I'll be looking for a refund from the publisher. I gave this book two stars instead of one only because I liked the variety of ways to use the words offered in each lesson.
We use this as a supplement to our daughter's homeschool language arts curriculum, I like the varied activities & expanding her vocabulary in a simple engaging format. BUT there are multiple typographical errors, our daughter has caught them herself so far but I have to say it's frustrating to see such a sloppy finished product being sold.
My 6 year old hasn't put the book down since it arrived. She loves to be challenged. It has done just that. If she gets stumped she tries to figure it out on her own.
my grandchildren love working in these books. they never have to be told to do them,they just gravitate to them. i highly recommend these books for summer activity for children. childred love to play school at an early age and doing these books gives them a sense of accomplishment.
