This is not just how to look up words in the dictionary. It also explains all those little marks, symbols and abbreviations. To be honest, I can't recall any teachers through high school, college or grad school ever taking the time to explain any of that stuff. It explains the items and then gives the child a chance to use them. I am using this for all of my children!
Students today do not know the parts of a dictionary. This skill used to be taught in English classes. I am beginning to worry about what we are not doing for our students. When I realized just how poor my students' skills were in looking up words in a dictionary, I began searching for a study guide for our Merriam-Webster High School Dictionary and found exactly what I needed at the company. An ISBN number was supplied and I found the booklet on .com. It states that it is for grades four through seven, but when you have high school students who cannot read a dictionary, the grade level of the booklet does not matter. No one is too old to learn how to use a dictionary.
