If you want to be grounded in the truth and find out who God is, I recommend you to read `Knowing God'. This book tells of the attributes of the almighty, loving, compassionate God. However, for those who perhaps are not ready for such heavy reading, it would be best to use the `Knowing God Study Guide' to supplement the book. This will further explain what is already discussed in the book such as God's grace, love and majesty, and can also be used as a resource in your devotional time to help you grow as a Christian.
I purchased this book because I will be teaching a class on this subject this fall. After purchasing the book I discovered that to develop my own outline and study was going to be very time consuming because the book is so complete. Later I discovered this study guide and have found that attempting to put this together for a study for others it would be a tremendous help. In fact even for individual reading I found this very comprehensive, thought provoking. Well worth the cost and the effort.
I have had this book for years and find it so beautiful to read and re-read. Of course nothing is better to hold and to read like the Holy Bible, but this book helps with ones walk with God. I have given it to a friend and he in turn bought and gave one to a friend. Whomever reads this book will love our Lord even more. Every family should have one and read and share together. Highly recommended
I coordinate a bible study for a group of about 20 men. After reading J.I. Packer's Knowing God and finding every one of the 22 chapters amazingly helpful, I chose it as our group's current study. Over the years we have used many study guides, most of which seem to be "stand alone books" which study group members tend to focus on to the exclusion of reading the actual book. Sounds odd, but busy men find shortcuts. The end result is that a portion of participants in a study group who only work through the accompanying study guide miss significant insights that are only found in the basic book. This study guide is different. Packer's book is 22 chapters. Packer's study guide is 22 single pages of questions...one page for each chapter. This "forces" participants to actually read the book. As a result, discussions of the important concepts Packer presents is much better covered in discussion. Our group is exceptionally positive and enthusiastic about this study and a large part of the reason is the directness of the study guide. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This is an excellent guide to learning about the nature and character and work of our God. Although at first reading one should probably begin at the beginning and work through, each division is v study of an individual facet of God Being and work and can be used somewhat independently of the other divisions of the book. It is easy to understand; is fully supported by Scriptures given; and I feel is an excellent addition to my study library.
I love the book, not a big fan of the study guide. I think the questions simplify what is discussed in the book. Maybe a better way to say that is the questions elicit simple responses where what Packer wrote isn't as easily captured.
This helps us to study and understand more about this book and ways to know GOD, but praying for the revelation of his word and Knowing Him is most important as we study. Pray for me and that God will work in my Life!!!
Our small group at church is reading and discussing the book. We are older adults whose ages range from mid-fiftes to early seventys. None of us would call ourselves "intellectuals" and reading the book for some has been a challenge because of the depth of the subject matter that Dr. Packer addresses. However all of us love the challenge and we are discoverimg that "knowing God" is a marvelous adventure of life with our Lord. Reading and discussing the book makes us examine what we say we believe and make an "intelligent" decision that deepens our faith, enriches our witness and effects our "walk."
