Teaching my child to read has been a great experience. To teach him to look up the meaning of new words has become a fun time activity. This book is essential for faimlies with school age children.
I purcjased this dictionary for my daughter last year when she was in first grade. It does not have basic words such as "Christmas", "decorate", "build". We are ordering a different children's dictionary tonight, and hope to have better luck! The photos are nice, but there are too few words and watered down definitions...
Great for kids 1st grade and younger. Nicely made with easy to read text and great pictures. Would have 5 stars except for the fact that my kids only used it for 2 years and then had to buy the Children's Dictionary. Good thing is that I was able to donate to the school after 1st grade.
I purchased this dictionary for my daughter when she was in 2nd grade. There were a lot of words that were not in her dictionary that were a part of the 2nd grade curriculum for our county here in Florida. She would ask me what a word means and I would tell her, "I just bought you a dictionary, so go and look it up." Well, she did and more times than not, the words were not there. So I ended up going to a local used book store to purchase her a dictionary. This was a disappointing purchase because she excitedly picked it out online and it did not serve her purpose.
I bought this for a friend's 5 year old son as a son because he's quite curious about what new words mean. Unfortunately the first three words we tried to look up were not in it. Based on that I'd say it's a little light in terms of content. All in all he seemed to enjoy it though.
My six year old grandson loves his first dictionary. He loves that it's colorful, has lots of pictures of the items and most of all, he is able to read it without much help fom his parents.I am an educator and knew which reference material would be most beneficial for a first grade tyke. And, the price was just right.
The colorful illustrations and the ease of use make this a perfect first dictionary. My daughter is just beginning to write on her own, and she is able to use this independently to check her spelling and find inspiration for her writing ideas.
I choose no star for this book. It looks like it's for new norms! You cannot find words that are for kindergarten or first grade talk less of 2nd grade! They need to edit and upgrade the book. It's ridiculous. So is the thesaurus!
