This is a classic book that covers the majority of the sights to see in Washington, DC. The authors and publishers have updated the book to include additional buildings and monuments that have been added over the past decades since it was first published- and they do a remarkable job of staying current. I purchased this book as a gift for my 4 year old nephew- and he enjoyed it- it was an easy way to help prepare him for a visit to DC. It doesn't make for a great bed time story- but does prep a better understanding of our nation's capitol.I am reviewing this product in an effort to help other customers through relaying my experience with the product and providing any insight I garnered. My wife and I got this book for our daughter just before she went on a short trip to DC. She read the book constantly before leaving on the trip and it held her attention while on the airplane and throughout the trip. It was informative and she became very excited when she would see the sites depicted in the book. My only complaint is that it is too long for a short bedtime read. Otherwise, its great, very informative, and fun for kids to read.
I bought several of these books when traveling in Europe as a souvenir. I have since bought all his books. The drawings are unique and have a vintage feel much like the Madeline books. You will want to keep these on the book shelf for years to come. Your children will cherish them. My only complaint is there aren't more.
Hard to figure out how this type of book will work with a trip. The book had lots on D.C. but really wasn't what we needed. So, it's ok and may come in handy; but I need to look for something different.
as with all of m. sasek's books, this comes with the exceptional illustrations he is famous for. the information is plentiful, but in some cases here, a bit too wordy (or at least wordier than his other books). i could see this entry being a bit too much for some children to sit through, even with the wonderful visuals.i also found some of the points of interest in the book to be a bit random (old globe theatre information, anyone?). i happen to enjoy random information, so this was a welcome addition for me, if not a bit strange in parts.and with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.wonderful book!
This is a fabulous read when planning your child's first trip to DC. It gives children enough detail to get them excited about some of the museums and monuments without boring them. I absolutely recommend using this as an introduction to DC. Since it was written a few decades ago, it won't work as a guide for planning your trip. It gave my 7 year old some perspective about what we will see and why these buildings/monuments are important. The illustrations are terrific!
Our 5 year old daughter absolutely loves this book. We just moved to the area 3 months ago and she loves reading through the book and asking us when we are going to the places. We can't wait to go explore all of the sights with her and then go back to the book for the reference. She even likes all of the "heavy" history facts.
I like these vintage books, I'm glad they are reissuing them. I have a couple, but have bought extra copies of this one as I live in DC and it makes a nice gift to friends who have kids and live in other states. A souvenir and gift in one!
