My granddaughter and her mother were going to DC and I wanted a good guide that would serve them both. The 10 yr. old loved the format. Lots of short pieces of fun information presented in kid-friendly fonts and colors with web-links for advance research. She and her Mom had seen some of the suggested sites on tv programs and were excited to plan their trip using suggestions from the book. Mom found the book to be great for planning your way around the city with just a few days to spend in it. Since the book features the highlights of DC, she could focus on what a 10 yr. old would want to see and figure out what they could fit in.Before retirement I worked as a public librarian and based book selections on their appeal to a wide audience, as well as their visual look and content. This book hits all the marks and injects some humor for the intended readership, too. It's exactly what I was looking for in a travel guide for a young person, and worked really well to inform her time-pressed Mom.
I bought this for my grandsons, 8 and 6, to learn a little about DC before they made their first visit. They liked the quirky, interesting facts and their parents found it a quick read ahead of the trip. It's a good choice for young readers to do some discovering on their own before they get to visit this amazing capital of ours.
10 year old girl and 9 year old boy both love it and can't wait to visit DC. We bought it ahead of time for our trip to get them interested and it definitely did the trick!
Though this is somewhat a home area, planning to take my7.5 year old granddaughter to see some attractions this summer. Also purchased Fodor's Around Washington, D.C. with Kids... . In comparing the two, Fodor's is printed in all blue where as this one is in multi color and more appealing/suited and presented to her age range. The one is fine for older kids or others just wanting a few snippets. Its also in alphabetic order. Will look for and purchase others in the kids guide series since we have plans to tour in Manhattan also.
Im so happy I purchased this book! We were planning a short trip to Washington with my children, and wanted to find the best places to visit. This book is very detailed and lists all of the child friendly attractions/monuments to visit. My 12 year old daughter really wanted to be involved in the planning, so a kids friendly book was the perfect choice. I'm really impressed by the facts and details the book provides. We had a great time, and because of this book, we were able to find everything quickly and plan ahead for our trip. I definitely recommend it.
I get to visit DC this summer. Kids Guide to Washington, DC, is a fabulous book, easy to read. I got it for me, not for a child. Lots of new information, lots of forgotten information, lots of reminders of our wonderful history.
Since we had been doing a lot of research on line, most of the information in this book was review for us. There were some interesting summaries of facts that will be handy in our discussions. I think the best use of this book for us will be letting the five grandkids read it on the plane. We also bought "Awesome Adventures at the Smithsonian" which is more appealing in format and interesting in content.
Bought this thinking it was for kids, but the information is actually very helpful to aldults as well. Many good tips and references for additional info.
