My son's school has adopted common core state standards for English language arts and mathematics, raising the bar for his achievement. I bought this book for him to improve his language and math skills. This workbook really takes the mystery out of the common core state standards and provides all the resources I need to support my son's learning at school. It includes standards overview with parent-friendly explanations, tips and activities for helping at home, skill-building practice activities, and critical thinking and problem solving practice. It explains clearly what are these new learning standards, and how I can help my son succeed in his standards-based classroom. He's already seeing how the techniques help him in his normal school work. He is now probably the top student in his class. In the Beestar online math tests (a wonderful website beestar.org, which provides comprehensive programs), he is ranked high in the honor roll. I’m very pleased with this book.
I've used Spectrum's books in the past and liked them, but this book was beyond disappointing. The math in particular is just worksheets of math problems. When there were examples of how to solve problems, they showed the standard algorithm as opposed to methods described in the 4th grade Common Core standards. (Some of the methods taught in 4th grade multiplication and division, for example, are precursors to the standard algorithm.) If you are looking for a book that will aid in understanding of Common Core for parents OR students, this is not what you need.
