Wow, it's been a good year for some of my favorite authors! For quite some time, I have felt that an author's debut novel is the best one, but some of my favorites are proving me wrong. I have read each of Dan Walsh's books, and while I loved them all, I think I love The Reunion the most. That may be the case for very personal reasons though.My dad is a Vietnam veteran and my hero. He was a Lieutenant in the Army and served in Vietnam for sixteen months in 1967 and 1968. He was wounded in combat a couple of times, but went right back into battle each time. He then came home and started a family with my mom and went on to become a very successful businessman. Sadly, he is now dealing with the health effects of agent orange exposure, but even through all of that, he is being very brave and I am so proud of him. I knew from reading Dan's previous books that he would perfectly touch of the emotions of veterans and their families in this book and he certainly did.Aaron Miller represents the best that the United States has to offer. His character is a wonderful example of the greatness that is in all of us and how it is never too late to recover what we think is long gone. I loved this story and just as I expected, it brought me to tears. It was everything I hoped it would be: touching, sentimental, romantic and VERY patriotic. It focuses on the importance of love, family and forgiveness.If I had to say something not so positive about this book it would be that it might be a bit too mushy, but I didn't care. I wanted a feel-good story and that is exactly what I got. I didn't want a lot of tension or uncertainty, so the mushiness was welcome for me. I would have also liked to see a bit more resolution for Billy.
