This workbook covers all the arithmetic manipulations of fractions. It is organized and presented in a thoughtful order. Not all the kids will be able to study this book on their own, but it certainly makes parental guidance easier. The Kumon workbooks generally deserve their good reputations. Unfortunately, this is the last of the Math series. For trigonometry and algebra, one has to look elsewhere.
This fraction book for 6th graders is only good for practice! Your child has to have a solid understanding of fractions to complete this book because all the book contains are fraction problems, no examples of anything. So not worth the money in that you can give your child fraction problems or buy a cheaper fraction workbook at Walmart...they are called School Zone Interactive. I will not recommend this particular book.
I bought this book used at a garage sale. I am so glad I did! My 12 year old niece and nephew were having a hard time with fractions and this workbook has helped out tremendously. First we go to the whiteboard and do a lesson on adding fractions. Then the next day they do 6-8 pages of just adding fractions over and over. The next day they finish the section on adding fractions, another 6-8 pages of homework. Yes, they hate it, but they got it down pat. Next, we do a lesson on subtracting and over the course of two days, they do the subtraction fractions as homework, the same with the multiplication and division. This book is a WORKBOOK, it is designed for continuous practice and mastery of a fundamental lesson before moving on to the next step. It is not designed to explain how to do fractions. That is the job of the parent or tutor. This book just provides many problems for the child to solve. The best part is the answers in the back. Yes! During a lesson I could have each child go up on the whiteboard and I could easily check the back of the book to see if he or she got it right rather than having to work out it out myself. And yes, I had to brush up on my own math skills in order to teach it, but it's like riding a bike. Once you've learned it, it comes back pretty quickly after a quick review. I highly recommend this workbook to help kids master fractions.
Each exercise is about 2 pages, short enough to be finished quickly, and with a little review or worked example in the beginning. Colorful pages with practice problems that are not too difficult for elementary school students.
Great book for practicing skills. I have used many of Kumon Math workbooks and they are all perfect to reinforce essential math problems. They may be quite boring for the kids since there is a lot of repetition.
My son teacher said she got this for her kids so we tried it. My twins love it. They had a hard time this year with fractions but this workbook is very easy to understand, The kids are telling their friends to get this workbook. Its great
This is a good, practical workbook. It's thorough without being tedious. I'd recommend it for extra practice or if copying problems out of a textbook is an obstacle for your kiddo. We use ours for home school.
Each section starts with an example. But the examples don't make any sense and if you follow the examples you will get the wrong answer every time. Also, some of the problems are set up to force you to use a certain method to lead to the answer. But again, if the follow that setup you will only set yourself up to get the wrong answer.I would not use this book to teach fractions to a child if you want them to understand and learn. You can use the problems in the book, but you have to be very careful. This book tries to force children to learn fractions by using LCM and GCF methods, but every child I have ever worked with gets those methods confused and always gets the problems wrong when they try to use them. Furthermore, not all number combinations will have a LCM or a GCF so I find those particular methods pointless to teach.Personally, I like to teach addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators by telling the child to multiply the denominators by each other because that will make the denominators the same. Then I instruct the child that if you multiply the denominators by each other then you must also multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second fraction and vice versa. It may take the child a while to understand this method, but it works no matter what.So I would use this book as a problem bank only. I would not advise anyone us this book to teach addition and subtraction of fractions.
