I love memoir-ish graphic novels, so when my review copy of Something New by Lucy Knisley arrived in the mail, I dug in immediately, accompanying Knisley on the journey from meeting her future husband all the way through looking back on her wedding and wedding planning experiences in a single evening. Something New did not disappoint, and it lived up to its name quite nicely on multiple levels--referring to the oft-quoted verse of things a bride should carry with her down the aisle, giving a nod to Knisley's attitude toward her wedding, which was to take an old and tradition-laden ritual and make it her own, and also, in a more metacommunication kind of way, signaling to readers that, by opening the cover of this graphic novel, they'd be experiencing something new (not that I'd expect anything less from :01 books).From the charm-filled and entertaining while still sparse and visually clean design of the front and back covers alone, I knew I was in for a treat. From the online buzz approaching the release of Something New, I knew I was in for a thoughtful, personal, and well-researched look at the parallel universe a modern bride-to-be finds herself in the moment she is engaged. But what I didn't expect while reading this book as a married woman was the overwhelming sense that Knisley got it, and the strongest desire that I'd had this volume in my hands to provide both preparation and commiseration as the big day approached.Knisley depicted, through endearing illustrations and bewildered narration, much of the confusion, frustration, struggle for self identity, financial headaches, overemotional conversations, and sudden attacks of DIY panic that only a sister-in-arms could truly understand.
