If your prayer life is routine, joyless, boring, unfullfilling...John MacArthur can help you to make the discipline of prayer powerful in your life. God wants us to desire and delight in him. The book is easy to read and understand, and the lessons contained therein are completely supported by scripture. Learn to talk to God.

Our group of 6 women is using this book for an informal Bible study and it is wonderful. Many years ago my husband bought a 10 casette recording from "Grace to You" about the Lord's Prayer. I was delighted to find that John Macarthur had revised this study about the Lord's prayer and added even more food for thought. Our group is really enjoying the study. If someone is out of town, if it is possible, we use skype to bring them to us. The Lord's prayer is the pattern for prayer that Jesus gave to us. It is an incredible way to pray.Mr. Macarthur includes a group study guide in the back so even someone who is very new or very nervous about leading a Bible study will feel comfortable. Great book!

This is a fantastic resource to gain a deeper understanding of prayer and how to approach it from God's perspective and not our own. Yet another great study by John Macarthur. Highly recommend it for anyone.

While this isn't the best book on prayer that I've ever read, it may be the best Scriptural study of prayer that I've read. MacArthur's in-depth Bible study on prayer is convicting and cuts to the heart. It can potentially greatly aid you in your prayer life. The former edition of this book, Jesus' Pattern of Prayer, published by Moody Press in 1981, is also excellent. Alone With God is basically a heavily edited revision of Jesus' Pattern With Prayer with a few additional chapters. Still, some of the points from the older book didn't make their way into the newer one.

I love the way he explains the bible and God's explanations in a way that I can understand and feel my personal relationship with God. God has blessed John with eyes that can see and ears that can listen and hear.

Do we make the best of our alone time. How do we look at prayer. A duty, a way to experience God in all that we do that it becomes a way of life. Do we pray that it expresses Gods glory, the furtherance of God's kingdom. Is our prayers God centered or self. The study is centered around the Lord's prayer to guide us. Prayer is to honor God not self. When we seek Gods will and character, we are changed and become more like Christ. When we understand Gods sovereignty, we do not become passive but urgent in our calling for Gods glory

I was looking for a Bible study that I could do alone & at my own pace. (I may use it in a group format later). I love John MacArthur's books in general & this one is a great perspective on prayer. There's a discussion guide in the back that can be used for Bible study-individual or group. And, as with most of his books, it goes deep into the topic & makes you explore in detail. I'd definitely recommend this book.

Alone With God: Rediscovering the Power and Passion of Prayer (John MacArthur Study)I read R.C. Sproul's Does Prayer Change Things followed by Tim Keller's epic Prayer before downloading this one. I recommend Sproul's brief work over this one as a first book. MacArthur's work gives the "what" and "why" of prayer, but not so much the "how," which Keller's work spends a good deal of time on. There is little in MacArthur's book looking at how people have prayed through the centuries, in contrast with Keller's work.In his writing, MacArthur is content not to reconcile God's foreknowledge with our responsibility. It's a mystery he lets stand. We know that God is sovereign over events, yet we are commanded to pray. He does give a theology of prayer and looks at several New Testament examples. Praying is part of our overall spiritual health that helps us be "worthy of our calling." While giving a basic defense of Calvinism, MacArthur exhorts the reader that evangelism begins with prayer; the Bible says so (Matthew 9:38, 2 Timothy 2:25, etc.).The best part is the line-by-line approach to the Lord's Prayer, a chapter for each. I note that MacArthur encourages Christians to submit to their governments and pray for it. He of course has the stance that the American Revolution was sinful rebellion. He reminds the reader that "we cannot legislate morality," so evangelical efforts of lobbying are mostly a waste of time-- better off praying for our leaders' hearts to be convicted toward repentance.MacArthur gets points for succinctness and biblical application. But he delves too much into Greek etymology of words to make his point, that is similar to his book Slave. Three stars out of five.
