This series is so good. It's absolutely worthy of all the hype, which I can't often say. I don't know what else I can add to the glowing reviews here, and I suspect my review will probably get lost in the shuffle, but I just read this last night and was compelled to praise it.The best compliment I can give this book is that I'm in no rush to see exactly where the story is going. I've just been enjoying the ride. This is very rare for me. I don't really like ongoing, serialized storytelling (which might sound odd coming from an avid comic book reader, but it's true). There's something about an ongoing story-- whether it be comic books, TV shows, an ongoing series of novels, etc.-- that's inherently unsatisfying. For the most part, if the series is wildly popular it ends up getting overextended to the point of dilution, and if the story is unpopular it doesn't get the chance to reach its natural conclusion. Both of these are big problems, and no matter how good the premise or the characters, the storytelling really suffers. It's very rare that a story is popular enough to keep going, but is also kept reined in so that it can remain focused and follow through to its natural conclusion. Even the most tightly-plotted series probably relax a little because the creators and fans enjoy the ride.Personally, I enjoy arcs. I like to see stories reach their natural conclusions. A proper story should have a beginning, middle and end. I truly appreciate it as a reader. Sometimes I get a little impatient, even with stories I enjoy, because I get nervous they're going to go off the rails (which ends up happening most of the time). It's not like a movie, where you sit down and usually have a good sense that you're going to get an actual story.
