What a neat way to illustrate the concept of basic addition! Our kindergarten teacher read this book to the class and it provided an example to the children that adding numbers together can be done in a variety of ways: from simple to higher level thinking.
I find 12 Ways to Get to 11 to be a very useful tool for the classroom. Every two pages focuses on a different way to get to the number eleven. The pictures correspond directly to what is being said. This is a good springboard for more discussion and work for different combinations of numbers. Teachers can take advantage of the format in which each combination is presented and have their students come up with their own "number stories." This book provides a good alternative way of thinking about addition.
Well done Ms. Merriam!I want to come back after I've had some time to build lessons from this one, but I can tell you that this is definitely a book that you will use and reuse—I'll come back when I have some ideas, but chock full of examples to explore and discuss as mathematicians and scholars!
This book really made my students listen. As they were listening to it, you could almost see their minds doing the math in their heads. Good for them to see that there are so many ways to get to 11.
Heard about this book from a math specialist. Great story to keep kids engaged while teaching math.
I was quite disappointed with this book. Being a mathsy person (with a maths degree), I saw the title and kind of assumed that it would go through the 12 ways of adding up to 11: 0+11, 1+10, 2+9, 3+8, 4+7, 5+6, 6+5, 7+4, 8+3, 9+2, 10+1, 11+0. And seeing the picture on the front, I kind of assumed the author might use a mother hen and her chicks to illustrate the 12 different ways to add up two sets of chicks and find she still has 11 in the end. My 6 year old loves it that when you add a pair of numbers, if one side goes up by one and the other goes down by one, you get the same number in the end, so I bought this book thinking, "he'll love this!" But my assumptions were wrong. That's my fault and not the author's. This book is, as far as I can tell, just a cute picture book with various scences with various objects in those scences and when you add up all the objects listed there are always 11. In fairness to the author, she obviously wasn't setting out to do what I thought she might be trying to do. That's fine, but I would have preferred the the other type of book and being as it says 12 ways... and there are 12 ways of adding 2 numbers to make 11, then a mathsy person might well be slightly misled.
My 2-1/2-year-old loves this book. She loves to count the objects and always calls out "eleven!" with great enthusiasm.
This book is a fun way to teach combinations. Worked in my kinder class but other grades will like it too.
