This Pre-Algebra book is hardly 'pre' algebra. There is very little explanation given followed by fairly complex problems that no student who is trying to become comfortable with using variables will be able to handle. I am a trained, experienced math teacher and tutor, and my 13 year old son is an excellent math student. However, working through this book has been frustrating for both of us, as the conceptual expectation was just too high for anyone who is not quite ready for algebra. I believed the introduction, that the student would be given problems to encourage him to be ready for algebra. What happened was reviews and tests that expected explanations for things that were never fully explained in the first place. Save yourself and your student the heartache and avoid this 'pre-algebra' book. It may be a good book to get AFTER one has studied algebra and you want extra practice as a review for future testing.

I have effectively used this book for many years to review pre-algebra concepts with students before they enter algebra. Each concept is summed up as a refresher and then problems follow. It has helped me to find where the "missing links" are for students of all ages (even for those in college who are struggling) and to give more explanations when necessary.For those students who will be going into algebra next year, I recommend using this book as a "bridge" workbook to get them primed for success.

I recommend this book as a supplement for our summer program. We use the Holt series for pre-algebra and I find that the exercises in this book complement the curriculum very well. I would not use this book as a teaching tool but rather a reinforcement tool for after students have completed a course. The explainations are enough to refresh the memory with what was taught in the previous year.
