I chose this book after being impressed with Griffin's "Switching Well," another time-travel story. "11,000 Years Lost" is a longer and more ambitious story, but Griffin constructed it well and it held my interest strongly (in fact, I stayed up really late to finish it). Her depiction of life in a nomadic clan of hunter-gatherers was quite convincing, full of sociological details that brought to mind both the stories of Ursula K. LeGuin and the memoirs of young people in Colonial America abducted and adopted by Native Americans. The prehistoric family is depicted as affectionate and thoughtful, with a complex social hierarchy that seems to work in their environment. Griffin maintains the perspective of her heroine, so the reader only knows what Esther sees or hears about (or smells or tastes or feels). The story certainly stimulates a reader's curiosity about ancient society, and about how the people who study prehistoric culture know what they know.I would have liked a bit more background information on Esther herself, as Griffin only drops a few hints about her protagonist's family and school life. (Young readers will likely fill in the details from their own lives, which is not unreasonable. Compared to the difference between now and 11,000 years ago, the difference among preteens who read well enough to tackle a book like this is negligible!) I was delighted that the story did not morph into a teen romance.Griffin does not delve into the mechanics of time travel or the meaning of the bridge between the Clovis era and the present, though she focuses on climate change issues.
