A beautiful illustration of a high-school teen discovering herself and dealing with her sexual desires and heartbreak. The best part is that it is a one volume manga. No bulls***, the story is completed in one volume which I loved. Furthermore the art is AMAZING. The characters are relatable and the pacing is great. A must read for this good price.
Wow... This is a deeply moving read. I'll have to think on this quite a bit to write a review to do it justice. But just to say that this is a moving account of a boy and a girl coming to terms with their sexuality, and the complex feelings they have on the cusp of adulthood is not enough. This is amazing and yet seems like such a simple story. It's raw and explicit. It's heartbreaking and yet honest. The artwork itself is beautiful and can without words affect anyone reading the story. Not for the faint of heart, but I would say that A Girl on the Shore is a must read.
To keep this spoiler free the best I can, I won't go too into detail, but this is definitely one of the most bittersweet manga I've ever read ; as always, Asano's art is flawless. The two main characters definitely aren't going for a "most likeable" award, they're both very young, stupid and inexplicably human. And that's a big part of why this was so great to me. I'd also really like to take a second to praise how the entire thing doesn't fit into any kind of cookie cutter; I see a few reviews all over the web whining over how this "isn't a love story".It's not supposed to be, and that's conveyed wonderfully, in my opinion.Just because the two main characters are a guy and a girl who are physically involved doesn't mean it has to default to a love story. I can't express how much I like that aspect of it.One thing I definitely wasn't expecting was how explicit the sexual interactions were, so if you have any sensitivities or issues with that, I'd steer clear. It's definitely a great read, though. The pace of the book is fantastic as well, and the passage of time through the story is very present. If you're up for all the things I've mentioned, this is definitely for you.
Inio Asano is a genius when it comes to creating breath taking imagery to describe a situation, he's amazing. The imagery and metaphors found throughout this manga are a plenty, and I find myself staring at each and every page for quiet a while. This story is a coming of age in a modern setting that is like none other I have read, it's simply gorgeous and I suggest everyone to at least peak inside to see what it's about. It covers the topics of teen romance, bullying, finding your sexuality, suicide and depression, family issues, and growing up. Although be warned, some of the images are definitely 18+ as there is quiet a bit of sexual interactions between minors, so if you are uncomfortable with that, this might not be your book.Overall though, I am proud to have this beautiful manga on my shelf.
the fishing village art is amazing, it's my favorite kind of scenes in manga... this story, by one of the best single-volume-manga teams Inio Asano, the story is a bit of a culture shock - reminded me of a visual journey of Haruki Murakami's "Norwegian Wood".
A girl by the shore is a 2 volume story that was written by Inio Asano, the man behind Oyasumi Punpun and Solamin, and it's another fantastic work of art.A Girl by the Shore deals with realtionship between a girl who only wants sex to avoid her problems, and a guy who only wants to be with her romantically. The story isn't very long but it is fantastic. The art is amazing as usual and the only honest to god problem it has is the abrupt ending, but other than that it is a manga well worth your time and money.9/10
The day this book came in I finished reading it that same night. It kept me interested all throughout. There is a scene in the book with just pictures and lyrics to a song, and after finishing the book, I re-read that scene with the same song playing in the background and it hit me hard. Left me feeling like an empty void at the end. Excellent book.
The first thing that struck me about this manga is that the art in this story suggests the average people you meet everyday. None of the character designs are exceptionally beautiful. This helps set the tone for a nice slice-of-life manga. The depictions of adolescent sex are done maturely and honestly. There is nothing pornographic to find here; this is not hentai. However, some scenes were explicit enough that I was surprised to find it available in the US, given some other mangas which have been censored or banned entirely from the country. I've seen it in bookstores in a plastic wrap, which I guess is a really minor form of censorship.Unfortunately, the story gets a bit confused when it isn't concerned with sex. I'm unsure how important Keisuke Isobe's brother's suicide is to the rest of the story. I suppose the idea is that it doesn't have any deeper meaning but is something that the boy simply has to deal with as a person. I also didn't really believe the boy had any real motivation to assault the "playboy" near the end. I mean, the character was hardly featured after the first few pages. That said, the art and tone of this story I very much liked.
