The Astronomy Of The Bible (Annotated): An Elementary Commentary On The Astronomical References Of Holy Scripture
Ebooks Online

A tour of the astronomy of the Bible by a major British astronomer and Bible-believer at the turn of the 20th century, for whom the "Maunder Minimum" was named. Discusses the various astronomical bodies, the constellations, times and seasons, and three astronomical marvels narrated in scripture: Joshua's long day, the dial of Ahaz, and the star of Bethlehem. Two Christian scientist-theologians have added annotations in footnotes, indicating places where the work can be updated and clarified, based on more recent studies.

A remarkable book from the early 1900s (this is 3rd edition, 1922). Quite readable. Most chapters are short and to the point, and with lots of illustrations. There are over 30 footnotes added by the editors to give updated information. But the basic thesis of the book is quite valid: that the Bible contains a remarkable amount of information about astronomy in that ancient time. And that the critical theories which view the first books as a late cut-and-paste from various sources with agendas, are in error. The only true agenda of the Biblical authors is to give a faithful account of the true God of the Bible, in a culture saturated with paganism. The critics have the origin of the Creation and Flood accounts exactly reversed: the Babylonian tales are demonstrably later than the Biblical stories. And Maunder, unlike so many of the theologian critics, actually knows what he talks about. Great book, and a real eyeopener. Don't mean to imply that I agree with every conclusion, but it is a fairly argued treatment, and gives much food for thought. Maunder, by the way, was a well-respected astro-physicist from before the days of relativity. He discovered what is now known as the Maunder Minimum—an analysis of sunspot activity over the past centuries. Another great book that also proves that the Bible Criticism is wrong in dating the book of Daniel is Nabonidus and Belshazzar: A Study of the Closing Events of the Neo-Babylonian Empire (Ancient Near East: Classic Studies). It's a bit technical, but the conclusion is that Daniel had to have been written around 530 BC.
