Hull never strays into unbiblical "shepherding" theories of discipleship. He consistently develops a cogent argument for how pastors should forget about entertaining people and set about equipping their members for ministry.Unlike his more general works on disciple making, this title is geared towards leaders. Hull begins by stressing the importance of discipleship, challenging the traditionalist view that the pastor is the only one capable of doing important ministry. Later he focuses on how pastors can coach their people toward a successful multiplication ministry.- Dennis McCallum author, Organic Disciplemaking: How to promote Christian leadership development through personal relationships, biblical discipleship, mentoring, and Christian community
My first book by Bill Hull was The Complete Book of Discipleship in which he traces the history of Christian discipleship from the earliest days of the church down to the present. Having derived tremendous insight into this subject, I purchased a copy of The Disciple-Making Pastor and I have found this book to be one of the best practical books on how to do discipleship. Any church pastor who desires to make disciples for Jesus Christ instead of just church members would do well to buy a copy and read it thoughtfully and prayerfully. It could revolutionize your church when one puts Hull's suggestions into practice.
Purpose:To persuade the reader to make disciples and to count the cost for doing so.Content:The author establishes the need for disciple-making pastors, the challenges facing those who decide to make disciples, the theology of disciple-making, the role of the pastor, and instructions for making it happen in your church.Analysis:This book was first published in 1988 and revised and published again in 2007. I find it to be as insightful today as the first time I read it years ago. The “further reflections” section at the end of each chapter contains helpful lessons from the reflections of the author. He makes a strong case for his arguments and his seasoned look back at his earlier writings is a help too.Application:Who will benefit?Pastors and his staff. How does it benefit?Inspirational, Instructional and Motivational. It can help you think through your philosophy and processes for making disciples.Where does it fit in the ministry design process?Planning and design stage.Aha Thought:Page 129 & 130 Under Further Reflections: “The most important role of a disciple-making pastor is to develop his or her relationship with Christ. The danger is to focus on being successful in leading others, and if you have any time left, you can attend to your own soul.”
The measure of a man or a woman's life is its conformity to the life of Jesus so it is measured by our intimate relationship with the Father which will result in a life committed to building disciples. Our entire ministry becomes about building great leaders whose measurement will also be the number and quality of leaders they build. This book contains the mechanics of how to make others great in ministry not how to become great yourself. A great read for those who want to impact those in a position to impact others. It is strong where most of our training for Christian leadership is weak. If you are in any type of leadership position it is a blueprint for helping your pastor and your church to move in the direction of becoming a truly significant person and organization in reaching the world with the message of Jesus. I have read this several times, am recommending it to others, and made it part of my collection of disciple making materials.
The church faces a crisis today. The lostness in our world is staggering. Too many churches give lip service to disciple making, but never actually do it. This book will help you see why it is important to make disciples and help you understand how you can develop a plan to make disciples.
This book effectively exposes you to the problem in evangelical churches and drives you not only to the solution, but also a plan to implement a solution. Hulls work provides a philosophy of ministry anyone serious about making disciples can grasp.
