Journey billions of years into the future where humans live hundreds of years. Mankind has solved all the problems on Earth. But the universe has stopped expanding and the sun is gradually dying. A team of scientists has been assembled to formulate a plan to save the planet from being incinerated in the next Big Bang. One solution is to evacuate Earth's population in thousands of space ships. The other, more radical idea involves turning the entire planet into a colossal spaceship and moving away from the sun. Billions of years into the future the president must choose which plan to implement. Scwhartz has combined science and science fiction in an epic story of survival. "Spaceship Earth" will pique the imaginations of budding astrophysicists and engineers and will certainly stimulate many questions in young minds.
How will the human race handle the eventual demise of the sun? Or react to a shrinking universe after it expands to its capacity? Making preparations for something that will happen millions of years in the future is a huge challenge, and the Sylvia Wexler Earth Foundation (SWEF) plans to address this problem in a unique manner. To the SWEF, the only realistic option is to turn earth into a spaceship, but a solution this radical is not a popular one. Opposition forces try to change the course of action, but SWEF carries on with determination. Will their mission succeed? Can humans actually create engines that could power earth travel through space? Is it possible for humankind to sustain the momentum necessary for such a huge endeavor over an incredibly long period of time? Although this work of science fiction makes several assumptions, discussion questions explore these very ideas and others. An enlightening and thought-provoking read, Spaceship Earth is a startling look at our future which should spark some interesting conversations.Reviewer: Alice Berger
The universe is finite, and its time is coming to end. "Spaceship Earth" tells the story of how mankind must find a way to live through the universe's creation, a big bang situation. To survive, scientists have a plan that will take billions of years to execute, and require complete cooperation to save humanity. Easier said than done. A riveting story of speculative fiction, "Spaceship Earth" is intriguing and very highly recommended.
