"We need to love them more than their gay friends do, and we need to love them more than they love their homosexuality. Only then can we point to the greater love that God has for them." (73)It is by far agreed that homosexuality is the defining issue of the day for the church. If you exist on the internet with a blog you are discussing it and if you don't then you are certainly reading about it. If you can stomach it you can even watch it discussed on the news media outlets or listen to it on the radio. With a host of pastors, bloggers, counselors and theologians weighing in on the discussion it is pretty easy to realize that most of them within evangelical circles are not homosexual themselves. They are discussing the issue from the outside looking in as it pertains to the activity of homosexuality. That is why one of the most recent books on the issue is so unique. Sam Allberry, pastor and author, has written a short and very readable book titled Is God anti-gay? And other questions about homosexuality, the Bible and same-sex attraction. Allberry is a Christian who struggles with same-sex attraction. Choosing to use the phrase same-sex attraction (SSA) to describe his sexual struggles, Allberry writes clearly, pastorally and biblically. Allberry chooses to use the term SSA, instead of gay or homosexual, so as to avoid defining himself by his sexual struggles.Laying a Biblical Foundation of SexIn the first two chapters Allberry discusses what the Bible has to say about sex and homosexuality. Beginning with Genesis 1 and 2 we see how sex is rooted in the goodness of God's original creation and is designed to reflect the oneness and unity of the trinity. Adam and Eve were alike as humans but different in genders by design.
Though this is not a long book at all (88 pages), it is extremely thorough and very well written. I have to admit that I have never heard of Sam Allberry until I read this book, but he made quite a good initial impression on me with this book dealing with homosexuality. The chapters are as follows:1. Getting started: the Bible, marriage and sex2. The Bible and homosexuality- Surely a same-sex partnership is OK if it's committed and faithful?- But Jesus never mentions homosexuality, so how can it be wrong?3. Homosexuality and the Christian- Aren't we just picking and choosing which Old Testament laws apply?4. Homosexuality and the church- Can't Christians just agree to differ on this?5. Homosexuality and the worldConclusion- What should I do if a Christian comes out to me?Sam is very upfront and honest at the beginning of the book by telling readers that he is a Pastor who not only has struggled with same-sex attraction (SSA), but someone who still struggles with it. I found this quote from Sam on the differences between someone who describes themselves as "gay" and someone who struggles with same-sex attraction to be very interesting and informing: "It sounds clunky to describe myself as 'someone who experiences same-sex attraction'. But describing myself like this is a way for me to recognize that the kind of sexual attractions I experience are not fundamental to my identity. They are part of what I fell but are not who I am in a fundamental sense. I am far more than my sexuality.
