The Beggar's Bible tells the story of John Wycliffe, but not simply as a historical work but rather in a historical fiction style, where the narrative follows the story of other characters who are directly involved with the life of John Wycliffe in 14th century Europe. Wycliffe was a reformer who lived far earlier than Martin Luther and the time frame of the Reformation, and was a man who labored against the abuses of the clergy of the Roman Catholic church, and was instrumental in translating the Bible into English. He's been referred to as the "Morning Star of the Reformation" by church historians.The Beggars Bible is an excellent introduction to the life of Wycliffe. The story-telling is enjoyable and this is an ideal book to read with children as a part of family worship time. The only gripe I can think of in the writing is that periodically the author goes a little light with defining who says what, and you lose track of who's talking in sections of continuous dialog. However, if read aloud this can be remedied by using different voices for the characters.... :)This was a good introductions to a very important reformer. Louise Vernon has also written other enjoyable works of historical fiction that help tell the stories of important people in the life of church history.
All of these books are so good!!John Wycliffe is a famous Oxford professor who translated the Bible into English. Wycliffe believes that everyone should be able to read the Bible. Arnold Hutton hears Wycliffe's teachings and is inspired by his ideas. Arnold learns that Wycliffe's enemies are sending spies to his lectures and encouraging Oxford students to riot.
I ordered this book to add to my curriculum for third and fourth graders in a Christian school in Minnesota. It will be used this coming school year to help them understand how reading changes peoples lives, especially in understanding spiritual truths.Making an adolescent boy the main character, Ms. Vernon creates a story that fascinates the minds of both youngsters and adults. I look forward to seeing my students excitement as they read this book.
We own several of Louise A. Vernon's books and use them for teaching history in our homeschool. They make very good read-alouds. This one focuses on the life of John Wycliffe.
