“Now is the Time for Mercy.” That is the text that is written on the cover page of Father Michael Gaitley’s latest book titled The Second Greatest Story Ever Told. In a time where wars break out amongst nations and within communities on a daily basis, this mantra of mercy resonates until every ear has heard Christ’s message of peace. The ripples are felt at the turn of every page in this book. The second greatest story ever told takes place in Poland over the course of a thousand years. It hits is climax when one of the lowliest underdogs of all time, a mere priest, comes out of the shadowy abyss of World War II scathed but not broken. His mission? To save the world. His weapons? Divine Mercy and a single Lady.By now I’m sure you’ve realized that the main character of this story is St. Pope John Paul II, but what you might not have guessed is how the second greatest story ever told plays out in all of its celestial intervention. I consider myself a John Paul II superfan in that I have read many of his encyclicals, his biography by Peter Weigle, and countless other works on the great Saint. That being said, I was hesitant to read another book about him because I didn’t think I’d discover anything new.Boy was I wrong.Father Gaitley’s narration of the second greatest story ever told is unique in its approach and well documented by primary sources. He illustrates how St. Pope John Paul II’s pontificate became the climax for several stories that have their source in divine authorship: the Secrets of Our Lady of Fatima, Sr. Faustina’s visions, Divine Mercy, the effects of World War II and the Cold War, etc. All of these (and many other interesting historical tie-in’s) came to a head throughout the Polish Pope’s reign as vicar of Christ.
