A classroom of students is instructed to bring in their favorite fruits so that they can have some fun decorating the Sukkah for the Sukkot holiday. Michael brings a gigantic watermelon. It is unknown at that time whether Michael will be able to hang the watermelon in the Sukkah but their teacher wants to try to see if there is a way that they can hang it. They try different ways of trying to hang it and the solution they find is one that I believe will surprise many readers and listeners of this book.I liked Michael's determination to bring his favorite fruit to school to help with the Sukkah decorating, even though he probably knew it would be the largest fruit among his classmates. He had a playful attitude about bringing it which made his classmates smile... he couldn't consider not bringing it, after all it is his favorite fruit. I also liked the teacher's willingness to make learning about the Sukkot holiday fun for the children and for using suggestions from many of the students about how to hang the watermelon on the Sukkah so Michael's fruit could be included as well. This book with full-color illustrations was created for children ages 3-8, grades PK-2Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a free copy of this book from Kar-Ben Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
This Sukkot book is hilarious and very thoughtful. A class is asked to bring a fruit to decorate the sukkah. Everyone brings something small, such as an apple, grapes, and orange, except for one boy who brings a watermelon. After much thought and trying many ways to hang the watermelon, the boy thinks of a novel idea--hanging it from a sling. The book ends with the boy bringing in his second-favorite fruit--a pumpkin--to hang in the sukkah. The book is funny, the pictures are bright and tie into the story well, and kids enjoy hearing the story over and over. The books is best for the 4-6 year old range, but it can definitely be enjoyed by those younger and older. In fact, the book always makes me smile so I have enjoyed reading it repeatedly.
This is such a fun book for Sukkot! My preschool class loved talking about what we can hang in our sukkah and why a watermelon may not fit. But with teamwork and creative thinking we can figure it out. Holiday and life skill book in one.
There is a problem when a student brings a watermelon, his favorite fruit, into class for decorating the Sukkah. The teacher comes up with a creative way to deal with the problem. A great story, informative and creative! 4 stars
