Most of the poems are nice and the illustrations are vivid and interesting. My only two problems are the poem about the dirty pig girl and the sad crocodile. The last lines of the dirty pig girl poem basically say that people should not have to look at you unless you are clean and neat. The sad crocodile poem is even worse, with his friends running away from him and not wanting to talk to him because he is 'always sad'.In my opinion, these are not lessons I want to teach my children. When reading this to my children, I take the opportunity to reinforce empathy and concern for others instead of disapproval because others are not conforming.

Not the typical Little Golden Book storyline. It's just odd. Each page contains a 4 line poem, few of which have anything to do with saying please and thank you. I was hoping more for instruction to the reader on how and why to say please and thank you. Not so much.

I was a little disappointed - because I though it would be more of a "story" and not the poems. My students are ages 3-5, & most of the poems were "above" them - but I was able to use a few during our "Manners Week" at school

I bought this thinking it would be a classic book on using manners. It's not exactly. There is one page with Thank You's. The rest is inane rhymes about mostly outdated social customs, or are written in such a way that makes me think it would make your kid feel bad about themselves or tease other children. There's no story, it just flits from one social custom to the next, like being a messy houseguest to dressing nicely.I gave it away.

Great way to get a few lessons in manners in with this little book. It has fun characters in it and is just a very pleasant book to read with your toddler. They don't get that they are getting a lesson while enjoying the book. I like it a lot.

I was hoping the book would actually be about saying please and thank you, as my toddler has learned to say and do sign language for both but instead, the book is a collection of rhymes about all different topics. I'm not sure it actually says please or thank you anywhere in the book. What a waste. I'd return it if I could.

My 2year old daughter and I are starting to collect the Little Golden Books and when this one went up for a special price, I added it to our small collection. I didn't look as closely as I should have. The book is not one whole story by itself. Each page has it's own little rhyme and it teaches through the actions of different animals polite behavior and what isn't nice behavior. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I was hoping for a book that was a story about learning to say Please and Thank You and that is just not what this book is really about. All in all, a great teaching tool for groups of children and lots of interaction can be gleaned from the different animals and their individual stories.I would recommend this as a teaching tool.I would buy it again as a gift.

We are actively quoting this now to peacefully remind our kids of the best ways to behave. For example, "don't be a grabby gorilla". The kids really understand. I just wish we could do that without making whole animal groups negatively stereotyped.
